Well, I think that is the most defensible position. But I know I am easily bothered by distractions, particularly those of an auditory nature. I try to remove myself from the situation whenever possible. I also carry around earplugs. But in circumstances where neither offers relief, yes, I will try to tactfully say something.
What many people have said is correct: its overbearing to intervene in someone's personal habits. But when it becomes an unavoidable annoyance, I do think there is license for a tactful request to stop. That's very different from 'calling someone out for their behavior' or trying to change their personal habits. But we don't behave the same when we go out in public as we sometimes do at home, and its much more important to behave considerately when sharing a confined, public space. |

I agree...so then the idiot walking around with an open cass at 3:30 pm could be seen as a target for a tactful request to think things over? |

Would you lecture a KOREAN drinking a beer or some soju outside? If so, you must be making a hell of a lot of tactful requests. No, I think you guys are getting on your high horse because it stains your pearly white foreigner image.
I'd love to join you for a walk around Tapgol park or the front of Jongmyo sometime. I want to see this morality enforced.
Afterward, I'll walk with you in Hongdae and let you do the same to the foreigners. If we can find any. It isn't as common to see foreigners drinking outside at 3:00 pm on a Sunday as it is Koreans. Hell, I just gave you a specific time and place. |

I was asking a question, not saying what I would do...
In fact I stated what I would do earlier in the thread: unless its in my face and DIRECTLY bothering me, I will not say a damn thing, idiocy cannot be fixed or countered, it just is.
You can go run your little survey if you wish nuke, tell me how it turns out. Next time however, before you reply consult the earlier posts in the thread....I did live in Korea for 11 years nuke, I kind of noticed the drinking culture...
Just to help clear it up for you, here is what I said the second time I stated my position on this whole deal:

oh and just for the heck of it, here is what I said in response to the OP...wayyyyyy back on page 1 or this 3 page thread:

That is a tough one Cedar.
There is a fine line between politely telling someone their behavior is unacceptable and butting into a persons life.
As an example: the guy walking around with the open Cass at 3:30pm is an idiot but he is technically not bothering anyone. If he is staggering around bothering people because he is drunk then saying something may be warranted.
The girl showing her butt crack is just not aware of the impact it has in Korea. Basically telling her to pull her up her pants is a bit out of place. I personally would not say anything since she is just not aware enough to get it herself.
Bascially you cannot control idiocy or lack of awareness. |

Wider audience notwithstanding, please run your little survey.
It will be fun hearing about the results.
In more general terms: intervene if it bothers you personally or if it is a public nuisance. Otherwise, leave it be as idiocy is there to stay. |

I've sometimes told people to be quiet if they're talking very loudly and its inane boring drivel.... You know the type. If they were talking loudly about somethimg interesting then I'd just listen in and laugh along with them. Its not always the steriotypical American, either.
Another bug bear are friends/acquantinces that have studied or learned Korean and speak it well but sometimes act like uncooth, redneck, newbies.
What in the hell is the point of learning a language if you don't undertsand the culture that you're living in, baffoons one and all, I think. . So I will probably call them on it.... |

I'm pretty sure if they speak the language they've picked up something about the culture. More than I can say for all the foreigners who come to Korea to "learn the culture" but can barely muster more than a dozen Korean words. |

Nice editing, you old timers really no how how to misquote and distort things, good on you. As my previous short paragraph said, it's when they act as uncooth, rednecked, newbies that I get annoyed with.
Sure there's no doubt they've learned about the culture. It's just that they act like morons on occassions. Just because you know about a culture and that cultures norms dosen't mean you don't break them or act like a tool.
So why'd you get so defensive, touch on a nerve did I? |

| I only mind if someone jaywalks. Then I give them a nice curve stomping for violating God's law. |
