Upon accepting a contract for a Hagwon in Gumi, I was told by a couple native teachers in Korea that w/my experience in the States (7 years as a public school teacher & coach), I could have def gotten a job at a Uni.
My recruiters seemed more inclined to get me lots of Hagwon & public school interviews & offers. Sidenote - I had a public school contract & was ready to start but the State of Florida sent my documents to the wrong place & delayed the process, thus not putting me in Korea when I would be needed to start, so I took another opportunity.
I was skeptical about being considered for a Uni job, seeing how I haven't completed my Master's but was wondering if there was any truth to this....do my years of teaching experience (and obviously my teaching certificate) give me an opportunity to work at a Uni or Uni Language Center?

To be honest, Certification is not something a University requires or considers.
Your experience could be an advantage but unless you have a MA you would not be among the top applicants and would not have much of a realistic shot at any of the better positions.
What you could have done is apply at INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS. These tend to pay better and you would have been teaching your topic speciality.
The Unigwon is another story and you could have a decent shot at one of these positions. Note however that not all Unigwons are created equal and that you need to do your homework. |

| I worked at hagwons and public schools for ~2.5 years, then applied and got into a Uni...I don't have an MA, just a BA...I am really good looking though.... |

Thanks for the input. I'm not quite half way through my first year, so I've got some time to research options but it's nice to have this info going forward! I would like to end up in Busan, so I'll likely start searching there and I def appreciate the info - thanks again, Patrick! |

It always helps to be ridiculously good looking, NW....that's what I'm gonna use to my advantage! 
How was the application process? Did they hassle you about only the BA? Is it a Unigwon/Language Center? |

Their clients are hagwons and public schools. You can't expect them to look for other jobs for you. |

I'm starting to apply for some Uni jobs, and I'm a little worried that my super-ugly passport pic is working to my disadvantage. I don't have an MA, but I'm working on one, and I'm a decent looking woman... but my passport pic is really, really ugly. Maybe I could counter it with a really, really nice resume pic, though. The one I got looks honest, but a little frumpy. How va-va-voom can the resume pic be? |

Really? Well, I suggest integrity over trying to get a job based on your gender appeal. Funny how we all claim passport photos to not look like us. Interesting considering they are supposed to look exactly like us and in reality, probably do. Anyhow, send along another picture - a nude if you are truly inspired - if you feel that is what is stopping your gaining entrance. However, I surmise it is your lack of qualification that restricts you more than any photo.
The naysayers will now derail the thread, decrying me for thinking that qualifications are given more credence than looks, but I will also assert that they are not in university positions or if they are, they are not noteworthy institutions. As much as it may pain some of you to believe, at some universities - certainly the ones worth working for - looks are of no significance. For public schools and hagwons, maybe there is a point there, but then, that is business, not education. |

Bolded part is quite accurate.
I worked on the hiring committee of the University that employed me in Busan and frankly speaking looks were completely irrelevant to the application processs unless you sent in a picture of yourself at a party doing beer bongs.
Qualifications and experience are what get you a good university departemental position.
Kaypea what will hurt your chances is not your picture but the fact you have no MA as of yet.
Also do you have any relevant experience?
Note that Universities calaculate experience in many different ways. Some use a points based system and rank experience based on that system for example. |

Looks do matter for university jobs. Patrick, I think you're confusing what I've been saying, and maybe I've been a little too grand in some of my postings about looks.
What matters most in the "looks" department is that you look professional in your photo, and also in person. Looking really attractive helps, however. Every school can differ, but I find this to be a smidge more true in Korea than back home, anyway.
Age does matter at some schools, others not. And age can matter in either direction, as some have stated, as well. Some schools like younger and some like the older folks.
Bottom line, the best advice I can give anyone is to get a professional-looking passport-like photo taken at a Fuji or Kodak boutique store (costs under 14,000 for a dozen of them printed in a package deal) and be sure to wear a suit/tie. It's just shoulders up, so you don't even need suit pants for it (but I'd sure wear a suit for the interview). |

I certainly understood their main objective (their clients) was to place me in a public school or hagwon. I found it interesting when I spoke w/a couple of them & expressed my interest in Uni opportunities they never said they didn't also recruit for them.
I'm not upset about it but I simply stated my desire to also pursue Uni jobs and none of them made an effort to tell me they wouldn't/don't recruit for them. |
