NYC_Gal: Good to hear it worked out for you. In my time at PS I had some great CTs and we even became friends even though there was an age/sex/lifestyle difference. I also had pretty rough CTs, but luckily I didn't have to teach too much with them or depend on them for anything else. I could see how that could really bring you down if you got all bad ones. Nowhere is going to be perfect, and like I said it's all about priorities. I'm really, completely, not in any way a morning person so afternoon hours sound fantastic to me. But, like Chambers says, vacation, vacation, vacation. Having to get up early makes me behave and save more and I can use those savings on a beach somewhere for 3 weeks in January.

Not knowing locations really does suck, though, as does going in blind on your housing. Nothing's perfect.

Yeah, the vacation is one thing that I'll miss, but I have shorter hours now. Now, not all of my coteachers were horrible, but the ones that I ended up sharing an office with were horrible (both of them were head coteachers.) The funny thing is, one of them was quite nice until she was promoted to head coteacher, after the previous old spinster left. I am very close with one of my former CTs, and she visits my place and we go out to eat. As for the ones that were decent but neither great nor terrible, I didn't bother keeping in touch.

I am very glad that I made plenty of contacts, though. It made finding a good hagwan extremely easy.

EDIT: I taught English every day during the summer and winter, with the exception of my vacation. I desk warmed after lunch, but had class every freaking day.

Yeah, I had to teach every single day during 'breaks', too. Either at my school or another one. Sometimes both, one in the morning the other in the afternoon. Well, for the first 1.5 years anyway. But in my hogwan days I had to work 12 hour days with up to 10 hour long classes during those breaks, with the school always finding loopholes to limit my already weak OT rate, so it wasn't so bad. I mean, you're still just actually working half days. Your hogwan obviously works for you and many others feel the same way. I was just trying to answer the OP's question of why some people prefer SMOE as well as dispell some myths about PS. There really is no definitive answer, it's just up to the individual's desires. In the end every job you take anywhere in the world is a gamble in some way.

Vacation is cool, but it isn't everything. It's only a few weeks out of the year. If you compare that with any other job, you could always quit your job and go on vacation, hehe. So, I dunno, the whole concept of "vacation" is over-rated as you could simply do a full year at a hakwon then go on your own 5 month vacation if you want to! Sure it's unpaid, but who cares. At least the rest of your year is better!

SMOE subsidizes a yearly "flight" ticket for you visit your home.

You can use this cash to travel anywhere as it's quite large(over $1250).

It's over $3000 for a vacation versus zero compensation with a hagwon....not to mention you don't have to quit your job.

Sure is.

If your school is generous, you can get your pay boosted greatly via after school and district work.

I used to make roughly 3.3 mil a month and finished at 4 o'clock with 8+ weeks of vacation.

Your miles may very, but I've only met one guy who's hagwon was as generous and awesome to work for.

Not to mention the vibe is much more chill with in public schools if they like you. No worries about student enrollment or parent complaints.
