This week I've been surveying my students (3rd-year middleschoolers, nice ordinary girls) whether they'd rather stick out or fit in. About an even split of opinion, with some predictable reasoning.
One or two students in each class shone with some original thinking on the issue. Those girls could be difference-makers one day. |

To the post above - I doubt it (America and UK, anyway).
Y'all gotta remember something - Individuality is something we haven't always had ingrained within us. It hasn't been filtered out of the Korean genetic code, leaving us with this expansive range of mental epiphany.
Our own individuality only came about post WWII, during the 50's. It was around before to a lesser extent but the style was indeed to conform as much as possible. This whole radical lady gaga business was really quite recent.
There was a little individualism thanks to the whole excitement of the american dream and other such things, but the War, the Church and so forth knocked back individualism for a bit. It was the Beat Generation, the invention of cars, the invention of FEMALE cars due to a certain female equality act and about 300 other things around that period that made us who we are today.
These things haven't necessarily hit Korea yet. Or perhaps they have hit and it is currently happening as we speak. It doesn't happen overnight, afterall. I've seen my fair share of overly tattoo'd, stupid haired rebellious Korean youths around, It's just leaking out of their pores.
Don't be complaining about social evolution in action. It's a little different to ours. if we weren't different, there wouldn't be such thing as culture and I suppose I can circle that around and say there would be no such thing as creativity.... The very EXISTENCE of Korea is more creative than you can comprehend!

Let's be careful about using words genetic code of a people as people with racist intentions use such language. I don't think it's what you meant.....However, avoid such language... |

Genetic code is racist? I was saying that *isn't* the case.

| How low can you go? I NEVER stated creativity was THE essential quality for good living. You have to twist another's words to support your "argument"? |
Let the record state....

| Your post is completely obtuse. There is an art to living and that art requires creativity. |
Ye, you did state that creativity was THE essential quality. You listed creativity and only creativity and you used the word "requires".

| Snarky? So besides lacking creativity, you're short a sense of humor. That's a tough thing to copy. |
You don't know anything about me and what I've done. As an open-minded person I am creative enough in thought to recognize that people can have a good life without creativity and that creativity is not everything in the world. Others here seem to treat creativity as almost a religious-type thing.
Again, Dave's Church of the Creativity. |

Baking a cake requires an oven. Is that THE ONLY requirement? No.
I didn't mention other requirements because the topic under discussion was creativity. And nowhere have I posted that it is "everything in the world."
If you were as "open-minded" as you claim, you wouldn't consistently twist my statements.
On an Internet forum, you are what you post. And besides your spurious everyone everywhere is the same psuedo-ideology, you've posted plenty about your personal life here, so your statement that I "don't know anything about you and what you've done" is another falsehood. Pizza, anyone? |

You're trying to prove a negative..that doesn't work.
Even in any country that you might consider the most creative in the world, you could find examples of things that lack creativity.
As for avoiding flamebaiting, well, you seemingly built your post with that in mind. So given where we are, I'd say what lacks creativity is your post.
Given that the vast majority of people here aren't remotely fully invested in Korean society and culture, asking them to judge it, is pretty meaningless.
combined with your leading title, you didn't ask a neutral question you already assumed a position, it's pretty clear how this was directed. |
it's amazing how much of a self-righteous tool you came across as just then.
really mind-blowing. |
What's so self-righteous about calling out an obviously leading and trolling question?
I'll give him that it is well crafted, but it's still very obvious. |
Having an opinion is 'trolling'? |

| I can't believe somebody dismissed Korean film as uncreative. The realm of film making is the only place Korea is truly creative. Of course most Korean films that saturate the market are terrible (like most products that are intended for the masses) but the good ones are much more original than Hollywood. Even the good movies from Hollywood are always a remake or adaptation of a book. Rarely does something original come out. |

Speaking about Korean schools of which I have years of experience with - yes they are highly conformist. There are uniform requirements on hair, jewelry, and shoes.
Also, I think most would agree Korean teachers do a lot of direct lecture teaching as opposed to having students in groups where they solve problems and come up with arguments themselves. Partner / group projects are common in us skools - at least when I was there...
I also am disappointed in my favorite cute bunny girl group 2ne1 who stole this song from Lionel Richie (actually I think they made it bettter

Anyhow I was at a Korean museum and saw an actual wood block type printing press that shows Korean beat Gutenberg in that invention ( and museums are always right ...right? ) also I have seen Korean art and it looks fine and creative - and as far as poetry goes though nothing will ever top the western great I read this in uni and I still think it is the bomb!

Oh and I second the Korean film compliments! Korean romance film love triangles are almost always great - the love actually remake was better - and BABO was funny yet sad and then there was the one where the guy ides of cancer and writes a corny love song - that was great too "You are my destiny / sunshine" is the all around the great too... I do not watch TV so can't comment on the drama there though... |

Yes. Though I'm almost inclined to replace Korea with Chan-wook (ook) |
