I need to upgrade my hdd in my laptop. The only 7200 rpm, 750 gb laptop hdd's I can get here is either Seagate Momentus or Western Digital Scorpio Black
I can probably get it sent from home but shipping cost and potential for damage doesn't seem worth the risk.
Which brand is more reliable? I've tried both and had both fail on me. The notorious blue screen crash or inability to access the drive. |

If you're willing to go with a 500GB drive, I'd suggest the Momentus XT. The speed increase is really amazing. My computer boots in half the time it did with my old Momentus 7200 RPM drive, and everything launches much faster too. Many commonly used programs/files launch 4-5 times faster.
It really has made a very noticeable change and gives you the advantages of both SSD and traditional hard drives. |

+1 momentus XT. It's sort of in the midway point for SSD's and HDD's in terms of speed without the horrendous SSD price tag. |

I also go for Seagate. They've served me well. If nothing else, they have a longer warranty. |

Another +1 for the Momentus XT ht\ybrid drives. They're sold on Gmarket but Amazon, OWC etc. may ship it over for cheaper. I got it for $99 on Amazon and it was a bargain upgrade at that price. |

I doubt it would be much cheaper in the long run to have it shipped over. Places like New Egg and Amazon sell the drive for $100. These places would most likely charge at least $20 to ship to Korea, though I bet it would be closer to $30 or $40 since their US shipping cost is often $10-$20. For sake of argument, let's say it is $30 shipping to Korea. Even if the government adds no tax, you are still looking at around $130, which currently comes to 142,000 won.
I have seen the drives in Korea listed online for 140,000 won, but I went to Yongsan Electronics Market and got one for 147,000 won and only had to wait 10 minutes to get it. If you order from the US, you are looking at having to wait several days or weeks for delivery, and will only save a few thousand won.
I think it's probably better to buy the drive locally. |

I talked to some computer junkie friends. Told me I should hold off for at least another 6 month, that's when the 1 tb laptop hdd's should be rolling out. By then, the price for the 750 gigs should hit rock bottom. |

Rock bottom = an inch below the rim, sometimes even higher prices for older gear. Weird. |

The ones out now are slightly bigger than they should be. But the newer ones should. I haven't opened my laptop yet, but I read somewhere that laptop companies are future proofing their higher end models to give some breathing space in case the drive is a little bigger than it should be
Worse comes to worse, I'll rip out my dvd drive and plop a hdd there. |
