I'd say the place I regret visiting the most is Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. The beaches sucked, the food was nothing like I expected (I'd heard that Malaysian food was reason enough to visit the country), the natives weren't friendly, prices were high for SE Asia, and well, I just never got the vibe I usually get when I'm in SE Asia.

I second this. Overall Malaysian Borneo was a dissapointment and expensive. Of course, we did show up on the first day of Ramadan, which wasn't the best plan. The beaches in KK were revolting and full of trash, people stood around on the beach waiting for us to get out of the water so they could take pictures of the foreigners in bathing suits.

Sandakan looked like it had been bombed.

People generally unfriendly throughout.

We did dive Sipidan and Kabul while we were there and they were amazing.

Air Asia is having a sale to flights linking Incheon and KL and I would normally be interested in it but I have little interest in going to Malaysia. I might check out KL for a night but there are just far cooler places to visit in Southeast Asia.

I do agree about the beach I hit in Kota Kinabalu. It was full of trash, the surrounding facilities sucked, and the people were far from friendly.

I couldn't disagree more with the above posters about Sabah/Borneo. The place is absolutely stunning, and you can hang out with orang utans!.

The orang utans themselves are worth going for in my opinion. I only stayed a few days to see them and the mountain, and I largely found the people to be friendly and accommodating.

Just wanted to balance things a little there.[/b]

Or maybe it was the orangutans who were friendly, not the people? I have felt no desire whatsoever to go back to Malaysia since that one trip. Not even Air Asia bargain flights have made me want to go back.

Nope, I did mean the people. They were certainly friendly enough.

Does it really matter anyway if you're just going for a few days? I think a couple of people being rude is a fair trade off anyway if you get to spend time with some of the most amazing creatures in the world.... in the only place you can see them!

I'd suggest you're a little over sensitive if you can't take a little bit of rudeness for a few days in exchange for a once in a lifetime experience.

Dude, I never said the people were rude, just that they weren't that friendly, so no, I'm not oversensitive. I'm also not much into meeting animals though I'm into nature.
