He must have really done/said something to cheese them all off so much. "Eat the humble pie. EAT IT." Pretty extreme reaction. |

to all those that are hatin' on us "lifers", go ahead and laugh all the way to the bank. yeah, you can get a job back at home.....if you want to work at a call center, like the OP currently is doing. woot woot to $10 an hour.....did i mention no health insurance, no vacation and no paid rent???
tell me how you expect to compete with everyone else when they have stripped the country of its manufacturing base and everybody and their dog is applying to the next job waiting tables?
and some of y'all forgot.....many us aren't here simply 'cause we're losers. we made bad decisions in university and got liberal arts degrees instead of science and math degrees. kinda hard to compete with the next zuckerberg or gates moneywise. talking about throwing even more cash at education while we're still trying to pay down our debts from our past choices. it's an endless cycle fools.
and another thing. some people thing you have to be back in your home country to be successful or 'normal'. whatever. i never intend on permanently going back to my home country. i intend to work and see the world the rest of my life. baby? no. mortgage? forget about it. paying into social security? pppfff. |

Harsh man. You'd better hope you're never down and out. Someone might urinate on you instead of offer some support. And you'd deserve it.

| Well, qcat, you must have pretty low expectations as well as low self esteem, if a call center is all your destined for back home. I'm not hating all you, lifers. You can spend the rest of your life in Korea, that's cool. But, honestly, do you really want to? Can you see yourself being in your 60's and teaching The Englishee here in Korea? Be honest. Yeah, I dig the easy nature of the job as well as the no rent apartment, but there is a finite amount of time to stay here. It's good to do for a few years, but to live the rest of your life here? Not for me. It is a quality of life issue rather than a financial issue. I would have no problem working a job like I have in Korea for the rest of my life...but only if it were back home. I' ve never been about making the most money. I've never been about having possessions. So, making a massive amount of money is something I don't really care about. My only issue with Korea is that I don't wish to spend the rest of my life here. |

*Slow but loud applause*
I agree. I think the reality of back home hasn't caught up with people yet. Just yesterday I was talking to a foreigner with no work experience other than working a hagwon and a degree in Communciations. He was telling me about how he's going back to Eastern Canada to get a job with more respect because he's sick of working in a hagwon.
I replied that the salary, working conditions and benefits were going to be worse back home (he works in a good hagwon and is treated well). I got scoffed at and he told me that if one puts out enough resumes and wears a suit, one can get a 60k per year job even in Nova Scotia in less than a month.
Most everyone I know who went to university with me is scrapping by, with the exception of a few girls I know that married into a wealthy family or people that were wealthy and well connected to begin with. |

Well, if you save and invest the money that you make in Korea wisely, there's no reason why you should have to work past your 40's. |

Don't be daft. People who work on Wall Street or in the City can retire when they hit forty. Even 50 would be pushing it a lot. No matter how many illegal privates you do, kimbab meals you eat and family marts you drink outside, it aint gonna happen from teaching English in Korea. Especially not if you have any desire to start a family in the future. |
