Check out Jeju Air. Incheon to Kita Kyushu (about 50 km south of Fukuoka) in October 2010 was less than 250,000 KRW. |
They only fly 3 times a week but yes, price-wise, that's certainly a good suggestion. I've known of people paying even less than that, actually.
However, bear in mind that Kitakyushu is north-east of Fukuoka City, not south. And from Kitakyushu Airport to downtown Fukuoka, it's well over 60km and, unless you have access to a car, it's a bit of a trek. By local train it'd take you well over an hour and a half, even if your connections all worked out favourably.
So flying to Kitakyushu is quite possibly a useful option if you're just looking for a cheap way to get to Japan and aren't too fussy about where you land. But anyone aiming specifically for Fukuoka City should check carefully that they wouldn't be better off just flying (or sailing) there directly, especially given how close (barely 10 minutes on the subway) Fukuoka's own airport is to its downtown area. |

I'm interested in going to Japan for about a week towards the end of June. I have to visit Tokyo and probably Kyoto, but also wanted to go to Fukuoka to see the site where my grandfather's WW2 POW camp was.
Is it possible to fly one way into Tokyo and then travel by bus or train to Fukuoka then fly back from there or ferry from there to Busan? The Busan idea isn't necessary, just thought it might be convenient for me to see it.
If I plan on staying for about 5-6 days in Japan, how much mony do I need to bring? Is it really ridiculously expensive? |

I'm planning on going to Japan at the end of September for 3 weeks or so. According to wikitravel Japan the boats are
Busan-Fukuoka: JR Kyushu Ferry [11], 092-281-2315 (Japan) or 051-469-0778 (Korea), operates hydrofoil service several times each day, taking about 3.5 hours and costing 13,000 one way. Camellia Line [12], 092-262-2323 (Japan) or 051-466-7799 (Korea), operates a ferry which takes about 8 hours and starts at 9000; if overnight, it may stop and wait in front of Busan Port in the morning until Korean Immigration opens. (Compared to most airports, there should be relatively little security hassle on this line.)
Busan-Shimonoseki: Kanbu Ferry, 0832-24-3000 (Japan) or 051-464-2700 (Korea), daily service. 13.5 hours; 9000+.
Busan-Osaka: Barnstar Line, 06-6271-8830 (Japan) or 051-469-6131 (Korea), offers thrice weekly service. 18 hours; 13,700+.
----
The 9000 yen ones to either Fukuoka and Shimonoseki look like the best deal. I don't care how long it takes to get there.
Which city would be better to land in? Fukuoka or Shimonoseki?
Also, I'm thinking of getting the 21 day J Rail pass. Around 55,000 Yen. I want to see most of the main cities like hiroshima, osaka, kyoto, tokyo. Any suggestions?
When I leave Japan to go to China I'm thining of taking the ferry from Shimonoseki to Qingdao for 15,000 yen. |

I just got back from Fukuoka a few days ago. I left Friday morning and came back Saturday night. I think I had the cheapest trip ever.
The JR Beetle (hydrofoil ferry, Busan to Hakata Fukuoka) had a deal if you reserve 5 days early for 69,000 Won round trip. I actually reserved the ticket the day before and talked the lady into giving me the deal also.
I took a bus down to Busan from Seoul overnight (36,000 Won but you can take the regular bus with smaller seats for about 22,000 Won). Definitely a great deal, you should see if they still have that 69,000Won round trip deal. WHAT A BARGAIN!!! |

I checked the JR Beetle website but couldn't see the 69,000 won deal. The best I saw was 100,000 won.
Where did you first hear about the deal? Did you just find out when you got to the ferry at the office? |

(I speak Korean)
I called the JR number on the website and they directed me to the Japan office (they also speak Korean but they are way overpriced). When I called to reserve my ticket (I was leaving Friday morning but I called Thursday at around 12-1PM). Call the Korean office in Busan. When I called, I was expecting a round trip price of 180-230 thousand Won. The woman told me if I reserve 5 days in advance I can get a deal for 69,000 Won. I forgot what the reason or "event" was for, but that's what they're doing right now. If you can speak Korean try calling the office in Busan (JR Beetle). I hope they still have that because it's such a great deal.
By the way, you pay about 20,000 Won at the Busan Port and 1500 Yen at the Hakata Port - some fee, I forgot what it's called, so keep that in mind. |
