I will be spending about a month on Bali this summer vacation and would like to know if anyone can recommend a beach that has cheap accomodations. From what I've heard, Kuta does not sound like my kind of place. I'm traveling alone and in my 30's...just looking for a nice, friendly, chill scene with a good swimming beach. Anyone have suggestions of any places that might be a ggod match? Thanks!

If you've got a whole month, I'd recommend checking out the Gilis, a couple hours to the east by boat, at least for part of the trip. If you want to go budget you can take a slow boat for about ten or fifteen dollars, I believe. They're very, very laid back, and have some of the most beautiful beaches I've found anywhere. They also fit your budget needs.

the demand for lodging in bali in the summer high season is extreme.....there are some great places in most of balis beaches and nearby(gilis) if you do not stay directly on the beach.

I haven't been to Bali since 2006 so I wonder how it's changed, especially in regards to Internet connection.

sanur is a good beach and still close to kuta

I spent 3 weeks in Bali last Winter and will never go back there again.

I spent 5 months in SE Asia and Bali was my least favourite place. Do NOT stay in Kuta. While I was there, a tractor had to comb the beach every day for the thousand, yes thousands, of dead fish washing up on the shore. This while people were sunbathing right beside the smell.

There are fabulous beaches on the island, but really only in places that have expensive accomodation.

I only heard good things about the Gilli islands. Didn't make it myself. Slightly more expensive than Bali, but worth the extra cost.

Please don't stay in Kuta. While it has the most affordable accommodation prices on the island, it's for a reason. Also, the nightlife is just drunken idiots etc.

Sorry you had a bad time but I have fond memories of Bali. I'd go there more often if the airfare wasn't so darn expensive and the flight too long for Southeast Asia.

Kuta sucks but there are plenty of other affordable places to stay, and the island is small enough that they're all easily accesible by bus.

I stayed at Pemuteran, which is a tiny little town on the northwest coast, last Christmas for a few nights. It's a really nice area with good scuba diving at Menjangan Island. I paid around $15 a night for a simple room with private bath, but as others have mentioned summer is busy season for Bali because all the Aussies come up.
One thing that drove me nuts in Bali, though, is all the *!/@! roosters starting to crow at around 4 in the morning. As many of the cheaper rooms are open near the ceiling to allow air to circulate, they allow all the sound in. Even with earplugs I couldn't sleep once they started going. Just something you should be aware of.
