Done my contract, and I can spare about a week before I go back to Canada to do some Asia vacationing with my brother.

I am definitely planning on going to Hong Kong for about 4 days (a friend will be travelling there at that time) but I want to stopover at another asia destination beforehand- somewhere tropical (in the line of beaches)?

I was thinking Thailand for 2-3 days? I don't much experience travelling in Asia, so any tips or suggestions on how to best use the limited time I have would be helpful.

Additionally, all this would be happening near the end of may, 23 onwards.

Thanks.

I don't understand why you would do that. There is so much to see in China. If you want tropical just go to Hainan. It is a tropical island in China and an excellent tourist destination with lots of beaches. You could stop at Macau on the way to Hong Kong from Hainan. It would save you an additional flight expense since domestic travel in China is very inexpensive.

How much are visas to China for Canadians? I know that it's not hassle free.

I would recommend the Philippines since there are really cheap flights from Hong Kong on Cebu Pacific (I think). And it's 21 day visa free. The only part that I question is whether it is worth it to fly somewhere for 2-3 days since part/most of the 1st and last day will be spent in transport and not on the beach. If anything I would say that you only need 2 days in Hong Kong.

You really don't have enough time. Go to Repulse bay on the southside of hong kong for a beach, and take a ferry over to Macau for a day or two for some variety -- although plenty to do in Hong Kong. Much less expensive and much less hassle this way, and you still get to see two distinct places.

I would second staying in Hong Kong for the week. Four days isn't enough time, and there is lots you can do from HK.

You could go over the border into mainland China and see Shenzhen. Go to Macau. There are plenty of islands like Lantau, Cheung Chau that you can visit. Plus, as someone said, the south side of HK island has lots of beaches and quieter more chilled places.

I lived in HK for a while, and believe me there is plenty to do in a week. And as its close to China and other islands, there's really no need to stretch yourself to do two countries. As a week really isn't long enough to do so.
