Roger Ebert calls this "The Greatest Music Video Ever Made"

"The Grand Rapids LipDub Video was filmed May 22nd, with 5,000 people, and involved a major shutdown of downtown Grand Rapids, which was filled with marching bands, parades, weddings, motorcades, bridges on fire, and helicopter take offs. It is the largest and longest LipDub video, to date.

This video was created as an official response to the Newsweek article calling Grand Rapids a "dying city." We disagreed strongly, and wanted to create a video that encompasses the passion and energy we all feel is growing exponentially, in this great city. We felt Don McLean's "American Pie," a song about death, was in the end, triumphant and filled to the brim with life and hope."

Thanks for posting that. I hadn't heard about it until now. It made me miss home a bit (I'm from Michigan, though not from GR). I'm surprised about GR being listed on the "declining cities" list. In Michigan, the decline is almost all in the eastern half of the State (Detroit, Flint, Saginaw, etc.) It's nice to see people care about the community they live in.

Great coordination but the small groups of people were overshadowed by the big venues. The city sure looks mostly empty! Triple the people count and it may actually appear robust. Maybe centralizing them and segmenting the time, moving them around more instead of the camera would have created a greater sense of a cup not emptieth out.

Pretty epic. I agree that if they managed to get more people in some of the shots it'd be a bit better as it did seem the city was kinda empty at points, maybe if they could have just managed to fill the bridges at the end. Just nit picks though, it was very well done.

Wouldn't that make it fake though.

I am more interested to know how they could recruit so many people and then make them to act at the right time when the camera was moving. I wonder how much time and how many times did they practise together to get ready for the shooting

uplifting

*Edit*
Seems everyone can pull together and create something positive to change the perception of a disinterested few..

now if only we could get the politicians to change their attitudes and generate real jobs geared toward education and research, more of America could have something to smile about

I thought it kind of looked unnaturally empty. Like only the people who were in on production were there and the rest of the city was completely empty. I imagine it was due to the city closing down roads ect to make sure the filming went to plan. I still imagined at the end the person on the helicopter was escaping a zombie apocalypse ctiy ala 28 days later. Again though, I thought it was very cool

Yeah, kind of underwhelming. And I know for a fact that Grand Rapids is one giant Catholic suck-town.

Besides, I think we all know what the best music video of all time was:

What? That's nonsense. GR is heavily influenced by the Dutch and the big denomination there is Dutch Reformed or the Christian Reformed Church. Think Calvin College, Zondervan and Eerdmans publishing houses etc.

The video is okay. I can see Roger Ebert remains hyperbolic as ever.

Grand Rapids looks like a nice enough city. It reminds me of my home city, which I love. I am in the market for a house in a shitty but soon to be gentrified area. I wonder if they have any of those there...

Grand Rapids is kind of like a Korean Concrete City...things are pretty nice and all, but it doesn't have much character.

I'd just keep on driving through Grand Rapids on my way to Holland....

Michigan is all about Traverse City and Ann Arbor. Maybe the 248 if you like wannabe East Coast suburbia.
