I am hoping to go to Korea in Fall '11. I am a Poli Sci/International studies major at UW-Madison. I am wondering what people plan to do, or what people have done after going to Korea? As I don't plan to be a teacher for life, I wonder what others' paths are, and how working in Korea has allowed you to realize your goals?
I know it's a broad question, but I am one year out of college, and the 'real world' seems disappointing, so bear with me!  |

Yes, the real world is pretty awful.
I plan to return there, and then likely come back to Korea broke and broken and spend the rest of my days as a miserable alcoholic.
I will get at least a few years in Europe though. Thanks for the memories, Korea. |

| Going to China when my contract ends so that I can study Chinese and intern for a year. I then intend entering a dual master's program in public policy/admin or international affairs with the first year at a university in Asia. I'm applying to courses where the second year will be at Columbia, the LSE or Sciences Po. After that, I'll try and get a job in policy for a large NGO somewhere in Europe or maybe Asia. |

Plans? Have you seen the lowlifes working as English "teachers" in Korea?
I doubt they have plans for anything more than getting drunk and trying to get laid. |

| I was thinking of just staying a year but since I have no other skills than teaching here I am seriously considering staying longer. Plus the fact if I go home it is impossible for me to keep up the "I'm a teacher" persona with the ladies but here I can get away with it and it affords me more opportunities to meet and hang out with them. |

I'll disagree with the lowlifes part, but I won't disagree with the quoted part. It seems to me that this is a fairly accurate of most people who come here for a year or two who aren't qualified teachers or career teachers. I'd also add to that that they're here to travel. There's nothing particularly wrong with living like that, but if you want a career it's pointless.
I've been here 19 months now. I've lost count of the number of people who have gone home, struggled to find a job, and have come straight back. The worst part is they couldn't understand why they couldn't get a job. Hmm, could be because you spent every single weekend out in Hongdae/Gangnam/Itaewon, etc. and didn't try to improve your CV one little bit. OP, find a position near a company or organisation in an industry that you are interested in working in in the future. Volunteer or intern at said company, if possible. If you're not sure what industry then live in Seoul as it'll give you more opportunities to explore possible careers. Also, try and learn some new skills whilst here (languages, computer skills, etc., etc.). Don't be passive about improving your CV like a lot of people here seem to be. |

im going to resist the bait and not say anything that will get me banned...
Most days i feel negative towards living in korea for obvious reasons. Originally i said id never come back to this place, but im on my second time around and ive found a product in korea that I think will revolutionize a certain industry in canada.
im looking to import the product next year after my contract is finished and start a company in canada. as miserable as i am living in this god forsaken place, im thankful for coming back as i now have a business venture i can take on. im actually in the process of speaking with the manufacture in korea for exclusive distribution rights in Canada.
when life gives you korean students, make lemonade. |

| I'm out of here this Sunday. Over 3 years in Korea, I've managed to squirrel away enough to take a one-year vacation in the Philippines. If I'm still happy there a year from now, I'll find a job and stick around for awhile. |

| When I finish my contract in late August I will have been here for 4 years. I'm moving to Toronto (love the city but have never lived there before) and taking a 2 year social service worker program at Seneca college. |

This is the scariest thing. 
I have done a lot to improve my employability while here, but is it enough? Despite my calming avatar, I'm really nervous about it. I hope I didn't spend four years of my life here just to blow it and have to come back. |
