That sounds really, really interesting. I've heard other people who have made the move to China say the same thing.
Any cities in China you recommend living in? Medium to large cities.
Like I said I have two years experience in a hagwon, a tesol, I'm white and I'm in my 20's from Canada. |

Can you explain in more precise detail the "friendlier women" part?
Thanks |

As far as being expensive, I'd wager that Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen are probably the same as Seoul - or close to it.
China has more variety. I guess you can't knock Korea for that. Korea's so small; you can't expect that much difference.
I'd have to agree on the less racism. The foreigners I've talked to who went from Korea to China have all said the same.
And Chinese women are definitely friendlier than Korean women. When I was in Shanghai, I was a bit shocked on how bold some of the women were about approaching me. But a word of advice: If an extremely attractive woman in China is approaching you, DO NOT agree to drink tea with her! (Ask her to join you at a Starbucks and see if she is still interested.) |

Funny - you don't like prejudice in the first instance but are quite prepared to indulge in a little yourself in the second |

Friendlier women? Yes, getting dates was easy
Prettier? Hell no, quite frankly some of the ugliest women I've ever seen. Probaly better in Shanghai or Hong Kong, but I've yet to hear any of fellow travelers speak of beautiful chinese girls.
Easy Chinese girls? Yep Hotties? Ummm....the only group of cute girls I remember were working airport security.
I have some professional model friends from Chinese(foreigner and Chinese). They make it pretty clear the standards are abysmally low.
Let's see now:
Flat as a nickel: Make Korean and Japs look like Nicki Minaj.
Short: If you like'm short and flat
Poorly dressed: Compared to their counterparts. Don't even get me started on the men. Fat and shirtless is a very common style in summer.
Teeth: Busted
A 8/10 in China is like a 4/10 in Korea. |
You had me on 'easy'. Now where do I sign up? |

Tukmax, I'd recommend cities like Nanjing, Suzhou, Dalian, Chengdu and Hangzhou.
As for Chinese women, it's rare for them to wear make up, when they do they look a lot better though. |

Hilarious ! I agree, but not so harsh on the chinese gals. In China, there are many many races, so you'd see swarthy Uighers, and larger, taller Mongolians, and even pretty Manchus which are my favorite.
Girls galore in China, and you can be any race, any age and still they overflow |

Okay. I'm only interjecting because too much is being made of Chinese women.
I enjoyed China. Shanghai and even Beijing are more cosmopolitan than Seoul. But the pollution is bad and even the cities overflow with nongmin provincials, who lack even the most rudimentary of street manners.
But the work environment is better. Yes, you will have an upfront investment in terms of getting your F-visa. And you may find yourself commuting a lot, especially in Beijing. But you also will have a lot more freedom and latitude in employment. You make your own way. China is a great place to come after the comfort and sheltered beginning in Korea. In Korea, hopefully you will learn how to teach (if you haven't already). When you come to China, you will finally be appreciated. The most rewarding thing about China is not the attention from women, but the more genuine respect that parents and students give you.
And the pay is not that much less in China.
But I found I missed the characteristic honesty and forthrightness of Koreans. Yes, you heard me right.

Spent 5 years in Korea, made the move to China 2.5 years ago. I agree with EVERYTHING D.D. says. Wish I had made the move 4 years earlier.
Korea was a good experience for the most part, but my quality of life on every level is so much better in China- better students, job, respect, friendliness, housing, travel opportunities, variety of food (still plenty of K-food as well)...
But too much cannot be made about the difference between the attitudes of Chinese gals compared to K-girls if you are a single guy!
In China I feel I have genuine friends (even male friends!). Age is no barrier to friendship. I remember finding one Korean friend (a geniunely nice guy who wasn't always jealous and trying to keep me from dating ANY Korean girl) who told me he would really like to be my friend, but couldn't be a true friend as I was 5 years older than him! I enjoy feeling like my existence in the country is being welcomed rather than simply being tolerated.
Kuros is right about the honesty and forthrightness...although I have NEVER had a child call me a pig in China...i don't miss that kind of rude forthrightness. |

Right, but what of our ESL instructor sisters? The dating scene may not prove much better for them, but I do believe they'll suffer less sexism. China has much more progressive attitudes towards women than Korea. |

| If I can find a decent position in China, I'm there. Right now, my SMOE job sadly beats out most of what I can find as far as pay, hours, days worked (no weekends), and vacations go. |

Thanks for the city recommendations and the other info about China in general.
However, I still would like to know something. I am backpacking around Asia once my contract is finished in Korea. I want to explore a lot of China. I am interested in finding short term employment there (say three to four months as I'm not really interested in doing another one year contract).
How easy is it to find short term work? And, perhaps more importantly, what is the visa process like? Do I need to return to Canada to get the visa ? Do I need documents like degree and background check?
thanks guys |

I think the shortest contracts you can find are for 6 months.
You need a degree, but you don't need a criminal background check. Also just in case you happen to enjoy a certin natural plant, there is no drug test. |

| I got a tentative offer for 13,000 a month in shanghai. huge pitfalls are having to pay my rent (according to craigslist, shanghai aint cheap...3500 rmb seems to be the minimum and i am not willing to take on roommates) and not receiving pay during vacation periods unless i work camps....so basically 0 paid vacation. |
