Cherbourg, France.
not exactly a city. teeny-tiny town and I'm a big-city girl.
My students and I went to the same club because...well, there was only one.
There was something just dismal about the place which made me depressed...literally, for a year. I gained 20 pounds.
Nothing to see. Nothing to do.
Don't even bring up the movie "Umbrellas of Cherbourg". The town is just crap. |

Wow! Actually I would say Montreal is the BEST city Ive ever lived in - I've lived in about 12 cities all over the world - zimbabwe for 2 years, all over Canada, Thailand, China, now Korea and I always miss Montreal
As for the worst city - Calgary by far - the redneck conservative racist garbage of a city should be fenced off to keep them from polluting the rest of the world (can you see I'm a little bitter? ) Yes, there are some great people in Calgary, but for the mostpart, I think I'd rather live ANYWHERE else |

I'm so into the History of Russia that I forget that they are in a bad situation now. Too bad.
I've heard about 'them people' in Calgary, I wonder how they got that way considering most Canadians are easy going and friendly enough. |

| Brighton, England was both awesome and unbearable. Good location by the sea, plentiful and diverse selection of pubs, restaurants, shops etc. I met some really colourful people such as musicians, artists and writers. On the other hand, it was also full of pretentious little idiots and hipsters who liked to sneer at people because of their inferior tastes. Too many people thought they were too cool for you and they were just working in the video rental store until their electro-synth, post-punk garage band made it big. The utter wankers. |

I've only lived in San Diego, Osaka (well, a suburb), and Seoul.
Seoul's the worst by a long shot. But I guess I've been relatively lucky. |

Windsor, Ontario. 
Bloody foul air smelt of burnt metal most days. A downtown lacking charm and sense of community, a few long roads lined with businesses stretching out. I lived two years of grad school in the only nice part, near the Ambassador Bridge, university and Detroit River, going to the U.S. for almost all of my fond weekend memories. The third year of my M.A. program I chose to live in Toronto and commute by bus once a week for two nights, three days because Windsor sucked so much. |

The best times I had in the region was in Detroit. Dinners in Mexicantown and Greektown, events at the Joe, like NHL hockey, baseball chillin' Saturday afternoons at Tiger home games, New Year's in Ann Arbour.
Windsor without being next to Detroit would have been worse, much worse. |

Tacoma, WA, where (I'm ashamed to admit) I grew up.
Tacoma's not a real city, just a large craphole suburb of Seattle with a bit of a small-town mentality with 2 military bases close by. I can't go to the local mall without someone recognizing me, and there's surprisingly few things to do in Tacoma (everything's in Seattle). The local public schools suck, though not the worst. While the crime rates have fallen in recent years, you still have to watch your back; this is a town that has had both a mall shooting and a school shooting, not to mention the fact that it serves as a dumping ground for Seattle's sex offenders. And don't forget the "Tacoma Aroma", that awful stench from the local pulp mill that you get to suffer through as you pass through Tacoma on I-5.
Most young people who've grown up in Tacoma leave: they either move to Seattle or join the military. The ones who stay are the types who get married (often to soldiers from the local military bases) and have kids straight out of high school.
I left Tacoma for Portland at age 18. I'm never going back. |
