...and if you were a newbie to Korea like me, how would you prepare?
I might be teaching a "literature" class this fall. I'm wondering if this is going to turn out to be more English teaching and less in-depth literature.
advice, tips, resources? Thanks. |

It better be an advanced class, and I doubt they have that many. I think you will get like 3-5 students at best who will participate. The others will still be working on pronunciation problems and basic beginner conversation. They won't even be able to form sentences, yet they might be able to read. |

Look at the Readers category at the Oxford UP Korea catalog. (This is different from the Reading category.)
http://www.oxford.co.kr/eng/ca/ma.html
It contains a lot of quality material for different ages and levels to fit any need.
The books are ESL-geared. They cover the classics and new material. They can come with DVD/CD ROM material. I've used them in the US.
The Korean high school students will be able to use them.
OUP Korea has a partnership with English-Plus bookstores in Seoul and I believe you can get them at Kyobo Bookstore too. I know I have ordered them off the Kyobo website when I was looking for example material to show Korean teachers I was teaching last year. |

I agree with iggyb
Teach the classics of English literature with graded readers, PPTs about the main themes and movie versions of the stories. It will be really interesting and a lot of fun, I'm sure. |

Look up David Hill at the University of Edinburgh. He sells a index that compiles the difficulty of different leveled reader publishers. (Not all publishers are the same. Cengage is generally the easiest, an Oxford & Macmillan are some of the hardest)
I think you can also download a free, older version off of Paul Nation's website. (The index is updated regularly) |
