Anybody know if it's possible to get to North America via ship or boat from Korea?
A google search came up with nothing, seems like a cool thing to do but I've never heard of anybody doing it.
If it is indeed possible, I wonder what the price is like vs. flying. |

you might be able to work your passage on a "tramp steamer" or something
could take a long time and be a rather circuitous route though like through somalia or something
not recommended!
i think there may be more possible options from Japan |

The last I heard is it was about 4000 US to take a ride on a cargo ship back to the USA. Used to be cheap, but now they are making money on it. Maybe the board for one passenger takes up space that could be used by a lot of containers. I don't know, you're in thier care for at least one month or so. It would be cool. |

Still, I don't know, if you could ship stuff back with you on the same boat, could be a cool trip yeah. |

Reminds me of when I had this noble idea to take the train from NYC to Vancouver. See the great north American continent and all that......went into the student travel center in NYC, got the cheapest possible quote from Amtrak and found myself booking a flight with Northwest 2 minutes later!!
The train was like 8 times more expensive than the plane. |

Funny, I was looking up this exact thing two days ago. I found a bunch of stuff though. Try searching Freighter Travel. That's really the only way from Korea to the US (you end up in California). I was thinking about going back to NY from Korea on boat then train. The boat costs more than the airfare, it was about 1500 dollars, give or take. I haven't checked the train quotes but the guy above just said it's more expensive than flying. I think he's right. I just don't get how train and boat can be more expensive than flying
It would take about 3 weeks to get to NY from here traveling on boat and train. |

Ok 1500 US is not really bad. I wonder if that includes room and board or if you have to pay for that also. I'm starting to become interested in this idea again too. |

Yeah, you're gonna have to surf around a bit. I was just reading up on info because I'm thinking about that trip when I leave for NY. I just tried to find where I found those quotes but I couldn't find it with a quick search. The price was a segment trip (not a round trip, so for example Busan second call to California). The price includes all three meals of the day and room.
I think it'll be pretty fun...yeah, flying is a lot faster (12 hours vs 21 days?), but it's something I've never done before. I'm sure you'll meet new people and get to know the crew a bit. |
