Hello all.

I know this has been discussed, but I cannot find the thread. If you can link me to it, that'd be great!

I'm a Canadian living in Korea. I need to get a CBC, but I can't go back to Canada. What is the best (and hopefully most convenient) way of doing this? I know the laws have changed a few times... as of June 2011, what's the best way for a Canadian to get a CBC while living in Korea.

I am in the process of doing this right now... Call the Canadian consulate in Busan ( If you are in Seoul call Canadian Embassy) and give them your Korean address (I gave them my schools address) The will send you out the proper fingerprint forms plus all the information that tells you how to complete your task (in English and in Korean), the kit comes in a couple of days(fast) You will need to go to the local police station (Get your Korean co-teacher or Korean friend with you) Like I said the paperwork is in Korean so the police will know what to do. You will need to send a 25 dollar money order with your criminal record check... (I had a friend go to the local post office back in Canada and buy and send me a money order, took about a week to get to me) Again check the instructions that came from the Canadian embassy... Once you get the fingerprint form done, fill in your name and the address of the school you are at, ( if you are not yet in a school make sure you have a dependable address the RCMP can use to get the CRC back to you. Note***
you have to check the reason you need to receive the CRC, Employment: English teacher. Make sure you DO NOT check the box Vulnerable Sector... Once you have your document filled out you need to send the whole thing to Ottawa... (info also provided to you) As long as you have everything and the post office does not go on strike you should get things back in a month... once you do that you will have to go to the Embassy and get things notarized, then you need to go to the Korean Embassy so they can do their thing... And you don't need VSS. That was dropped as requirement long ago since the RCMP doesnt issue VSS for employment outside Canada.

BTW, ttompatz, just wondered how you keep up with all the changes. Is there a website that lists all this information or are you just quite good at remembering the ins and outs of the these processes? Either way, thanks all!!

I've checked all the threads to see what the current situation with Canadian CBCs is, whether or not the RCMP check is truly needed or whether the Canadian Local Police check that immigration currently has on file for me (I am currently here on my E2 visa) will continue to suffice indefinitely.

I have read the posts of a couple people state that they have witnessed some candidates being refused E2s for not having the RCMP check.
While many others continue to claim that they are doing fine with Local Police checks. *Although some of these particular posts are made without knowing the dates in which immigration had been dealt with, ie. a local Police Check accepted many months ago may not have any bearing on what's acceptable now, or especially into 2012.*

Can you confirm that RCMP checks will be required, or is it of your opinion that it would be in our best interest to get these done?

The process that you've outlined for us here is helpful, so thanks. I am curious as to who told you this should take a month. Is this possible?
Why would this method be so much quicker than the usual 4 to 6 month ordeal everyone else is talking about?

I can confirm that I personally am aware of 4 cases (since March 2011) where current Canadian CBCs that were NOT issued by the RCMP (local detachments or regional offices) were in fact declined by 2 different immigration offices in Gyeonggi (Suwon being one of them).

I can also confirm that one applicant had his CBC declined even though it was RCMP because the letterhead was for the Halifax Regional Police.

Is it a hard/fast rule = no.
Can it be interpreted differently by different immigration officers and/or different offices = YES.

Also, people have to be aware that the "local" police check in many parts of the country ARE RCMP checks because the "local" police ARE the RCMP.

You can always go to the regional divisional offices of the RCMP to get it done as well (k-div in edmonton, e-div in Vancouver, m-div in the yukon, a-div in ottawa as examples). Google the location if you are in a city with a municipal police force that is NOT RCMP.

3 new, 1 renewal. All were certified by the respective k-consulate in Canada and then rejected by Kimmi in Korea when the visa confirmation was applied for (with the exception of the renewal).

The renewal problem was last December when the rules were in flux and before the "grace period" was announced.

Police services included Edmonton, Winnipeg, Calgary and Quebec City.

^^^ Good to know the renewal was not rejected.

Strange info indeed though. On the Ottawa Embassy website, its states local, provincial and RCMP checks are acceptable if done in Ontario.

Immigration has stated to me that "extending" my visa to the end date of my contract with SMOE will use-up my one time "waiver" for having a CRC in hand for a new job. If you cannot get a letter of release from your employer but think you can extend your visa and ride it out till the current visa expires, then transfer, think again, you will need the CRC in that case. This has forced me to literally use my vacation time to fly home and get fingerprints/etc done electronically and hope I can have everything done by the end of August when its all needed.
