It's cool for a couple days, but it's less interesting than other parts of Bangkok while being significantly more drunk. I actually recommend it for people who haven't traveled in SEA before, but there are better places to stay once you figure out your way around BKK. I don't really give it points for proximity to the monuments either, considering how cheap transportation is in Bangkok. |

El Nido, Phillipines is the most unique and beautiful place I've been to.
Also, Yangshuo, China for the scenery and beauty. |

Yet somehow far less disgusting than other areas of Bangkok which invite significantly less hate. |

I hear Khao San Road has a lot of untrustworthy expats who try to scam other foreign tourists. I haven't been there in years and don't care to go, either. |

Koh Phi Phi - gorgeous little island. Felt like paradise. No cars which is neat.
Bangkok - such a cool, bustling city. So much to do and see. I didn't mind Khao San road, China town was insane. Loved it.
Hoi An - probably my favourite place overall. Such a gorgeous wee town, and I had a fantastic time (so much great food) - go to Cargo if you go there.
Luang Prabang - again, it's a beautiful wee town, really nice and chilled out. I didn't really like Laos but this little french town is adorable. Best place to hire bikes and chill out.
Hong Kong - awesome city. Mostly for the shopping / it was my first trip to Asia.
Takeo, Cambodia - I volunteered here at an amazing orphanage that I highly recommend - New Futures Organisation. Such a friendly wee town and while there wasn't much to do outside of the orphanage and cruise down a river, the smiles made it such an amazing time.
Siem Reap - really liked it here, would like to go back/spend a bit more time. Angkor Wat obviously was amazing, although I preferred the jungle temple over AW. |

Chiang Mai is an grade A gem as others have said, as are Luang Prahbang and Vang Vieng. Not too big on Vietnam in general (spent a month there), but one of the craziest clubs I ever went to happened to be in Hanoi and I thought the area around the the little lake with the mini-temple in the middle was pretty nice. Siem Riep, yes; most coastal areas/islands around southern Thailand, yes. And I'm someone who absolutely loved Phenom Penh, though most people hate it.

I like Bangkok, but two of the worst hours of my life were the two I spent lost in China town there. Never seen more pedestrian gridlock. Disgusting sea turd tentacles wrapped on sticks and crazy Asian porn all in my face, then some dude on a motorbike tries to plow through the human gridlock. Two hours and I barely made it anywhere. Restaurants moving tables into fast moving street lanes, while people just casually sit down to eat as traffic whizzes by, drivers having to quickly adjust due to their lane all of a sudden disappearing. What a nightmare, I tried to get out immediately, then find a small park or quiet store, anything, but it was just more endless chaos. I realized that was why the tuk tuk driver dropped me off ten minutes outside China town and simply pointed in the direction I should walk. Cold shower (sitting) + Chang + tears, upon eventually getting back to my hotel room. Maybe there was some special thing going on that day, I don't know. I'm a seasoned traveler who has been robbed at gun-point and survived an attempted junky mob attack in a Russian ghetto, among other things. But still, for some reason, Bangkok China town makes me cringe when I remember that experience. Sorry, hit an unsealed wound I guess... |
