well, sad indeed. But, 1) he was suicidal -- didn't want to be saved 2) it was in sue-happy california, where -- even if he was saved, he would be likely to sue for unlawful detainment or assault or some other crap.
what the hell has this world come to? |

Everybody, police and public, watched a man 150 feet from the beach slowly get hypothermia and drown......for an hour!! That's depressing. What's the world coming to....
Did absolutely no one have a boat? |

a firefighter has no more of a duty to save a drowning crazy person than does an english teacher. |

And an English teacher has no more duty to save a choking student's life than does a firefighter. But I have jumped in to help the kid in the past because my first reaction is "OMFG! WHAT CAN I DO?!" not "Meh, I'm on my break". But I don't only blame the so-called professionals in this case. I blame the by-standers as well. However, it was a suicidal man, so maybe I would have thought twice before risking my own safety in that situation. The true horror is when the cop says he wouldn't save a drowning child. You're a human being. Not a very good one apparently. I can see freezing up in the situation or thinking someone more experienced will help, but what man, cop or no cop, answers that hypothetical hero question so coldly? Did he flunk out of law school and became a cop instead? |
