Where in Shanghai did you go for the work? Surely all tailors are not created equal Very Happy

Sorry, I can't remember other than it wasn't that far from the Bund.
If you find a failor don't pay until you get your clothes and they give you a sample of what ever material you pick out to compare your finished clothes when you finally go to pick them up from the tailor.

Anyone successfully get a suit in Hong Kong and can suggest a good place? I'm heading there next month, and while I don't think I'll get a full suit I'd like to get a suit jacket/blazer made up...

I would say a tailor made suit is an unnecessary luxury unless
you play in the NBA or NFL or have very unusual physical characteristics
(the shape and size of your body)
otherwise you can get perfectly suitable stuff off the rack these days
my tailor was in Roman Road and he was a gem!

Uh, sorry, can you quote a reliable source? Savile Row ain't famous for nothing and NO, a suit off the rack is NOT the same as a made-to-measure or bespoke suit.

I would very much appreciate some pictures of these custom suits. A friend of mine showed me his custom suit from Itaewon. It was such an ugly thing.
Sort of scared me away from going.

Far more reliable quality than the crap-shoot that is Itaewon tailors. Fashionable, modern styles, and about the same price.

u mean the shiny pieces of fabric with only 1 button jackets and sparkly ties they try to pass off as formal clothing? lol

i've never heard someone reference a suit as being of "reliable quality" lol. looks like you dont need anything more than a discount department store suit, so no need to comment any further on this thread. thanks.

depends where you go, you might end up with crap...hence the reason why im letting you guys know about a good tailor shop (did you read my first post?)

there will be guys selling you cheap-ass "handmade" suits that are glued together in places such as the collar and lapel. some places are too cheap and lazy to do it right, so they dont even finish the fabric under the collar. below you will find a picture of what im talking about. the suit on the top was finished and the suit at the bottom was glued together and had some corners cut.

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/8276/suit1jp.jpg

Also, take a look at this other picture. the one on the right was completely sewn along the edge of the inner lining and the one on the left was only sewn where the tailor thought it was necessary. both suits were made in itaewon (they aren't mine, just using them as an example)...

http://img543.imageshack.us/img543/589/suit2z.jpg

theres so many factors at play, and for people to just say that itaewon suits are crappy, without any logical explanation, it makes them sound like a goof (keeping it clean Very Happy )

i happen to know what i want when it comes to my suit. i must be doing something right because people are constantly commenting on my suits...i look at the other "teachers" at my school, and their boxy, ill-fitting, tailored suits makes me wonder how someone can spend money on something that doesnt even look presentable...you dont need to be a fashion designer to know what a decent suit is supposed to look like.

would you buy a snowboard without researching the appropriate length and proper bindings for your size and weight? same for a suit. its kinda like a "tool of the trade." do your research.

I got shirts done in 'Paris Tailors' in Itaewon. My shirts seemed ok. Anyone else have an opinion on that place?

I'm with you on the details of the suits Freddy.

I always take pictures and or a sample suit. I'm particular about the small details such as having functioning sleave buttons.

Hey Freddy,

Walking in your new suit paints by your good tailor do you ever notice extra fabric running down a leg from the crotch forming a so unsigthful fold?

Or is it that the front of the pant remains flat when you step? The mark of truly well fitting paint.

Thanks

I'll stick to department store stuff too. Arrow pants, shirts, jackets are probably better made anyway.

The department sell brand-name suits. Brands that have a reputation to uphold. If you don't know that quality suits are available in Korean dept stores then you need not comment any further on this thread. You don't display enough knowledge of the suit market in Korea.

When I talk about reliable quality I'm saying in Itaewon you won't get reliable quality in every shop. I know because I got a custom made suit from an Itaewon tailor which fell apart after 1 year. 500,000......a friend had a similar experience at another Itaewon tailor.

Itaewon suits are a crap-shoot. Some good reports.....some not so good.

I now wear 3 reasonable quality suits from dept stores which fit me like a glove and show no sign of wear after 3 years.

I agree with your take on things. If a suit cut for Korean men will fit you, then the department stores offer plenty of good choices, especially at the event sales.

And if you want to go upscale at the department stores there's Pal Zileri, Zegna, Dunhill, Armani, Landsmere, Brooks Bros., etc.

In Itaewon you've really got to do your due diligence, show them exactly what you want or they'll cut corners, worry whether the fabric is actually what they claim it to be and be very assertive about what you want through the whole process. In the end, you have to decide if it's worth your time and effort.

I listened to the OP and tried to go to Manchester a week ago on Tuesday evening. I went there at about 6:10pm but they were closed! I was really bummed out and since I am only in Seoul temporarily, I went to Hamilton Shirts.

Huge mistake. Their service was shoddy, their colour selection was non-existent (how many shades of white does one store really need?) and because they told me to come back to pick them up so late, I almost missed the pick-up time.

On the shoddy service count, the girl who was measuring me was giggling uncontrollably and had to make certain measurements four times. The entire staff was watching and laughing and it started to get embarrassing. One male who worked there assured me "Oh, don't worry. She's very professional". Could have fooled me. In fact, she was so professional, she had to get another woman to come over and redo the measurements so that they were correct because she couldn't finish the work.

I asked the girl who was ringing up my order when I could pick up my shirts and she told me "next Tuesday, after 7:30pm". I was unsure about this timing as it seemed pretty late in the day, so I asked her twice more to clarify the timing. What she neglected to mention was that they close the whole store at 8pm! I am only in Korea for a few more days. I had asked during my first visit if I could call later to have the shirts shipped if I could not pick them up. I was told that I had to choose right then. Tonight was the only time I could have picked these shirts up and if I had missed the time due to not being informed of it, I would have been screwed.

I don't live anywhere close to Itaewon and it took me some time to get there. I got there at 7:45 and the store already had a closed sign hanging on the door. I went in anyway and they got me my shirts. I asked the oldest man there (I assume this was the manager, but that's an assumption) why they hadn't told me that they closed at 8. He said that "we tell everyone what the pick-up time is". I replied that the person hadn't mentioned that the window of time was so short and I would have been really disappointed if I'd missed the opportunity to pick up my shirts. He just ignored me and walked away from me while I was in mid-sentence.

I was pretty disappointed (pissed) with that attitude towards a paying customer but I ignored it. I took a look at my shirts to make sure they were what I had ordered and I went to pay my remaining balance. Thinking he maybe hadn't understood me, I asked. He said he understood but I took his attitude to mean that he didn't really care. I again repeated to the man that I would have been really disappointed if they had been closed and ask what would have happened if I was unable to pick up my merchandise. Again, he walked off while I was still speaking to him. I have received a lot of BS from ajjoshis in Korea but I was pretty unprepared for this. I told the clerk as much and she apologized for his behaviour. While that was nice of her, I will never again be bringing my service to Hamilton Shirts and I recommend everyone else avoid it.
