Global leaders call for a major shift to decriminalize drugs

A slew of big-name former politicians are endorsing a report that says the war on drugs is not working and that drug enforcement policy needs to fundamentally change. The Global Commission on Drug Policy will urge a "paradigm shift" that emphasizes public health over criminalization tomorrow at a meeting in New York City, The Guardian reports.

Those backing the report include former Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz and former Fed Chair Paul Volcker. Former elected leaders of Greece, Brazil and Colombia have also signed on. See the full list of backers.

"What we have here is the greatest collection thus far of ex-presidents and prime ministers calling very clearly for decriminalization and experiments with legal regulation," Danny Kushlick, spokesman for the drug policy center Transform, told the Guardian. "It will be a watershed moment."

So basically the number of lunatics is so overflowing that they have no choice but to let them run the assylum.

The west has degenerated to the point that they now have no choice but to give in to the criminals and drug peddlers.

Lets just legalise crime, so then there will be no more crime! Genius. Rolling Eyes

I suggest googling "Portugal drugs". I'm starting to think you're a troll.

Yeah, we should just turn the US into even more of a police state in order to clamp down on people getting high. People should not be free to choose for themselves, we need to the government tell us what's best. More prisons, more crooked cops, more corruption-fostering laws, that's what we really need. And since we're basically a bankrupt that spends all our money on empire, we can fund the whole thing by dealing smack from Afghanistan and elsewhere (like the CIA does). Brilliant idea! (and seeing how effective the war on drugs has been to date, I'm surprised nobody's thought of it till now). ZIFA must be some sort of genius.

Screw it, while we're at it we should just start dumping (legal) Prozac directly into the water supply. That'll fix everything (and no doubt make ZIFA a very happy camper).

Global War on Drugs 'a failure

Quote:
About 250 million people worldwide use drugs that are currently deemed illegal, with less than a tenth of them classified as "dependent". Millions are also involved in the cultivation, production and distribution of drugs, according to the United Nations estimates quoted in the report.

The study said decriminalisation initiatives have not been accompanied by a significant spike in drug use, citing the implementation of such policies in Australia, Portugal and the Netherlands.

"Now is the time to break the taboo on discussion of all drug policy options, including alternatives to drug prohibition," Cesar Gaviria, the former Colombian president, said.

The commission called for the urgent implementation of fundamental reforms in national and international drug control policies.

I have never really understood why civil libertarians allied themselves with the social conservatives. It always struck me as a sell-out for money, but I prefer not to think of it that way.

Don't expect sense from ZIFA.

Individual volition and happiness, in defiance of the santimony of a coercive, po-faced majority, represents Man at his most righteous.

Why anyone should be punished often at great public expense for ingesting a particular substance is beyond me. Indeed, Id go further: why should anyone be punished for peaceably selling a substance that someone wants to buy?

Clearly pot needs to be straight up legalized. Absolutely no reason why it shouldn't be considering costs and benefits.

A case could be made for keeping "harder" drugs illegal. On the other hand their illegality drives the current unsustainable situation.

I say split down the middle maybe. Make consumption legal but continue to ban international importation.

Add a couple more global leaders to the list.

Reps. Paul, Frank to Unveil Bill to Decriminalize Marijuana

Ron Paul and Barney Frank will unveil new legislation to end the Federal drug war on marijuana. The bill would end Federal prohibition and leave the legality of marijuana up to the states. Cash strapped states may be motivated to make it legal for the tax revenues generated from marijuana sales.

I'd be interested to see drugs like weed, ecstasy and possibly psychedelics like acid and ketamine legalised, but not so much cocaine and speed. The first four I mentioned are chemically pretty harmless and don't encourage users to go out and cause trouble. The latter, not so much

Where would you place alcohol on the list? As well as prescription meds like Oxycotin, Vicadin and Percacet?
