She's been heading downhill toward ajumma looks in a big hurry this past year.
The way I see it, she's just a few years away from big glasses, a friz haircut, and clunky shoes with multi-flowered pants. |

| She's a model turned singer (through the process of sucking certain objects). Of course she's going to be ignorant. You can't expect an open and worldly opinion from someone like that. I'm sure some of you who have mixed race children will feel angry at her comments. |

| Korean pop singers couldn't give a hoot about foreigners or a more informed world view. They're happy just so long as they're being paid and successful enough to stay out of a Kangnam room salon. |

Total racist.
And Koreans are not a race. Asians are a race.
And I guess, if you consider a huge percentage of the Korean population being mixed with the blood of Chinese, Japanese, and now Philipino, Canadian, American, etc., as "homogenous," then.......
I suppose she'd claim that Erich Hammel's group had no children (it's documented that some stayed here and did). Also, what of the various countries that overran Korean for centuries? Do you suppose no children were born out of that? How can she explain the dozens of half-Japanese Koreans I've met over the years who were born and raised here? Of course, it was once very easy for the Korean male to put whatever he wanted into the family book.
Homogeneous.... once "race"... ha... she needs to move up North, where her views are a tiny bit more realistic.

That's because she's an ignorant sod. Her claim to fame is money garnered from singing, not smarts. Big whoop.

Actually, I lived here during the Park Chung-hee era. Guess how many times I heard that stupidity about "One race" or "Pure race." Zero, that's how many. I also knew a fair number of Koreans married to Japanese, Chinese, or other nationalities including from the West. |

So where do you think Hyo-ri got her ideas about the Korean race from? Did she come up with these ideas herself? |

| Oh, I have no doubt there have been racist jackasses all along. When I first lived in Korea, though, they weren't in the forefront as they are now. Most people treated other people like they were other people. |

Indeed. The only times I ever heard about it either were all on this board. |

| Since returning to Korea, I've heard it from some Koreans, not on this board. Even had one old lady stick her nose into my business and tell me that it's immoral for a foreigner to even speak to a Korean woman. Sadly, this old lady is an elementary school teacher. Do you really think that she's somehow keeping that attitude secret from her charges? Enough people like that and there's a sea change in societal attitudes. |

You do realize that you've just heard it from a Korean. Hyo-ri.......did you watch the video?
The point is, is Hyo-ri the one and only Korean who is so proud of her 'race' being ethnically pure? Or is this a commonly held belief among Koreans? |

Let's not be too harsh on K-pop singers. Don't forget that Gu Ha-ra of KARA donated a lot of money to the Japanese after that tsunami and seemed to be truly concerned about the plight of the Japanese.

A lot of current K-pop groups are more worldly than ex-FinKL members. SNSD and other groups have member who were born overseas or spent a lot of time there. Miss A has two members from China. More than making herself look foolish, I think Hyori made herself look old. She's not part of the younger generation that seems to be much more open-minded and globally aware. |

Can't be that common. She's the first and only I've heard. Yeah sure there are plenty of racists here (as in any country). But to ascribe the beliefs and statements of a small number of Koreans (famous though they may be) to the general population of 50 million or more is a bit thick.
And it's not just me saying that these are out of step with modern Korea...other people have already pointed this out. As for myself after more than 10 years here (with the exception of Hyo-ri) I've never heard a Korean saying this...and while not fluent..I think my Korean may be a little better than many here. |
