| What do you think about English-only English classes in public schools? I personally think it's BS. Over half of the students couldn't understand any new material in class. My former VP and the principal kept insisting me to teach in English and only in English while the co-teacher translated what I said to the class. |

| I don't get this. If the co-teacher's translating everything you say into Korean then it's not an English only English class. Or am I missing something? |

I'm just saying how ridiculous those bigwigs of this school were. They think that it's an English only English class but it's not in practice. |

I speak both fluently. I removed my wisdom teeth a while ago and perhaps I couldn't think straight. Sometimes I hate myself when I think I made myself clear but it doesn't according to others.
I'll make it clear.

1. English only classes can be very effective, if done correctly -- which can be said of pretty much any other method or approach.
Are you asking if they are implemented correctly? You have already said that at your school, the KT translates everything, so there are NO English only classes at your school -- therefore the ineffectiveness of the classes is no indictment of the method....
2. I think parents/administrators like the idea of English only classes, but the reality of it requires more work/effort/expertise/training than many realize, and so the implementation is less than ideal, resulting in poor performance of the program, which then leads back to dissatisfaction, and a desire to try the next quick fix....
If you really want to have a discussion, you need to separate out all the variables, and ask the questions you actually want answered...for example, you might ask:
"Does anyone working in a public school position, in an English only classroom, actually follow those guidelines, or does everyone have a K-teacher that translates for the class?"
The answer to that question could inform the next question, and so on.... |

| English only classes could work if the school used level-appropriate materials for the students, which could be explained in easy English, and which students could spend time mostly WORKING OUT FOR THEMSELVES. But schools will continue using materials that are too hard and that HAVE TO BE THOROUGHLY EXPLAINED to the students in order for the students to understand. Without a good curriculum, the classes will be bad in both Korean and English, and the students will get better test scores if the classes are in Korean. I'll be surprised if teachers really follow the requirement. |
