I am moving from the states to Korea in August and was wondering what possible job opportunities are available for me. I kind of feel like my situation is a bit different from a lot of people on this forum.
- I will be graduating with an AA degree
- I am a Korean citizen (So no visas or anything needed)
- I attended elementary school- college here (I was basically born in the US- I came to the states when I was 1)
So is my best chance at hagwons or the gepik internship (maybe even private tutoring)? If working at a hagwon/private what is the average pay I should be looking for?
Any help would be great.

You can not (legally) teach in Korea on an AA degree. You might be able to legally work at the GEPIK internship (TALK) but that only pays 1.5 million per month. |

I thought that was only the case if you needed a visa- however I don't.
Or did I misunderstand something? |

Nope...to the best of my knowledge whether you are Korean or foreigner...you need an uni degree to teach at hakwons or public schools. The only exception I know of is TALK. But that sticks you out at the rural locations in Gyeongi-do and only pays 1.5 million (or so the word is). |

(If you're a male) You haven't ditched your Korean citizenship yet? It'll be dangerous. You have to deal with the byeongmucheong (Korean military recruitment agency). |

Would you like to be? Korean plastic surgery is top-notch. ...
But back to the point. If you're Korean, then it MAY not be as easy as you think to get a hakwon to hire you. After all, you're Korean. They're looking for native speakers, and in their minds, you don't fit into that box. If I were you, I would look for jobs that specifically are looking for kyopos or translation or tutoring jobs where they are looking for someone bilingual.
Hard to say what salary you can expect. Best way to find out is to apply to a bunch of places, see which one offers the most, and take that one. |
