hey all Smile

I'm currently teaching in Spain and thinking about going to Korea to teach later in the year. I have a degree, a CELTA and a year's teaching experience. With my experience am I able to apply for higer levels jobs? What kind of stuff should I be applying for? Where to look etc etc.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Thank you! Byeeeeeeeeeeeee! Very Happy

1- Is your degree from one of the 7 nations on the visa list for Korea?

2- Is your experiences referenced?

3- When do you want to start?

4- Are you a citizen of one of the 7 approved nations?

Those are the first 4 questions that will start the advice flowing because as of now, it would be foolish to give you any advice or opinion on your employment chances....

My degree and passport are both UK. I have a year's experience working with adult's and children (varying levels including business English) that can be referenced.

As for when to start I was thinking of September/October time?

Thank you for your time Smile

Well then you can expect an entry-level position along the lines of 2.0 - 2.1 million won per month.

Public School hiring season is basically over until next winter (December on) and Universities are basically out of your reach as you do not have a MA and are applying from outside Korea.

That leaves Hakwons as they hire all year long.

Now, what you need to decide is where you want to teach in terms of location (city, country side), level (kids or adults) and how you wish to apply (directly with schools (you do the legwork) or through a recruiter).

I suggest you get ALL your required documents in order BEFORE you apply for a position. That means getting your diploma ready, getting your criminal background check done and so on.

Then, once you know what you want, start applying and you can certainly land a job within a reasonable time frame if of course you yourself are reasonable.

Before you apply, do your homework...

Read the FAQs here, some are older but they contain great information.

Check out places like Galbijim ( a wiki on working in Korea) as its chock full of information.

When you get an interview with a school, make sure to ask to contact one or two foreign teachers currently working there so can get the lay of the land.

Best of luck to you.

You might be bumped to 2.3 with some public schools for having a year's documented experience as well as the CELTA. It's worth a try.

I'd also say that with 1 year's Europe experience you can only really expect entry level stuff - private language institutes or government schools. Government schools are not that bad a way to start out, though. Some gov schools are pretty good, although it's a lottery where you end up.

If you're female, you could potentially fasttrack to a uni, although not many unis offer phone interviews. My first Korea offer was for Seoul National Uni, and I had no Korea experience and no uni experience at that time - it was a loooooong time ago, though. There's no way top places like SNU would hire these days by phone interview only unless you are PhD level. (Although some might say even SNU is far from 'top').

Kindies will pay 2.2-2.3 starting, particularly with a year's experience, but you will work longer hours (and the Celta will essentially be rendered meaningless).

I'd give it another year then apply to the British Council. They take on people with a CELTA plus 2 years experience and their pay and conditions are much better than anything anyone's mentioned so far

Good point.

Some specific types of schools may offer more per month but you will work longer hours.

As for Public Schools you may have limited success applying with them at this time of the year but there may be a few last minute spots open.

What is your motivation for coming?

Money? Then come.

If money is not an issue stay where you are.

I've been to Spain and I would have to say it was much easier on the eye than Korea.
