I've been living in the Washington, DC area for about 2 years now but I never bothered to get anything officially transfered to the area. My driver's license and passport both have North Carolina listed as my permanent address.

My question is this, If my passport says my address is in a different jurisdiction, do I have to use the consulate in that jurisdiction even though I technically live in Washington and all my other documents (background check, resume, etc) have a Washington address written on them?

I ask because it would be so much easier to just take the application to the embassy in person rather than send it all the way to Atlanta, especially since I'm a bit crunched for time. Has anyone dealt with this before? Do they make exceptions? Should I just get a local driver's license to make things easier?

Wait, I take that back. I just realized my passport doesn't have my address on it; it just has a place of birth.

So...revised question. How does the Embassy know/prove you live within their jurisdiction? Do I still need to get a new driver's license?

You are fine. You don't need a D/L to apply for a visa. Your passport is adequate ID everywhere on the planet outside of the US.

Thanks. I felt a little silly after posting and then looking at my passport more closely. I had to put my address on the application so I thought it would show up on the passport itself.

I'll probably still get a new drivers license (renewing back in NC) because mine will expire before I get back.

I have used both DC and Atlanta with a NC address. DC rocked; Atlanta sucked. You should have no problem.

No, many times in the US (and many parts of Canada) you will be asked for 2 pieces of ID even if one of them is your passport. On most of the rest of the planet your passport is considered adequate in and by itself for all purposes as a form of ID.
