It will be the Manitoba _______, named after the province not the city, that much has been confirmed.
Also the company that bought the team, True North, has recently copyrighted the term "WhiteOut" and has stated when pressed that it is not for the team name but for marketing purposes, as the 'white out' fans dressed all in white was a Winnipeg tradition with the previous NHL franchise. So, it is speculated, white would be one of the team colours.
The frontrunner for nickname has been the Falcons, the 1920 Olympic champion team from Winnipeg (Gimli actually, a community north of the city, a 1906-founded Icelandic team). Some like it because there is a jet named the Falcon. Others like it because there are some peregrine falcons on the top of the Radisson Hotel and a webcam has been monitoring their lives the last couple of years, cute white chicks now can be seen: http://www.cbc.ca/manitoba/features/falcon/

All I know is whatever they name the team it will be the hottest ticket in all the NHL over the next few years. I am from a city 2 hours south of Winnipeg ( and played hockey an hour west) and I know a number of people who are giving up their Minnesota Wild season tickets in order to get "insert name here tickets". The shorter drive plays a role, along with the MN Wild being brutally irrelevant.
I sort of hope they stay with the jets, but in all honesty its not a really catchy name. On the other hand I hope they don't go down the road of making a expansion team type name (wild, hurricanes, predators, etc) and stick with something classic that will age well.
Side note: Remember the name Brad Berry... he is a dark horse candidate for the head coaching postition, and a strong candidate for assistant coach. |

Ditto. NHL names have only gotten cornier since the Nordiques became the "Avalanche". |

Falcons? There's already a NFL team with that name. Lame.
The Mighty Ducks is the stupidest name ever. How about the Manitoba Winterpegians. Or the Manitoba Losers. Or the Manitoba Our Market And Stadium Aren't Big Enoughians. |

It's going to be the MANITOBA MOOSE! They did not sell the rights to that name to the farm team in Sin John's! Besides, why spend more money when you already have an established and very successful brand there in the PEG! |

Three for sure: Quebec City, Hamilton and a 2nd team in Toronto. Maybe a 4th as Saskatoon, Saskatchewan was set to get the St. Louis Blues in 1983 but the NHL refused to approve the sale. I'm not sure Atlantic Canada can handle an NHL franchise. |

Isn't the stadium small? Don't think they'll get good revenue on merchandise. A couple of years down the road people might not be so excited about their team and the prospect of travelling 300 clicks to go see a Columbus/Winnipeg game.
Smaller market teams aren't such a good deal for the NHL. |
