The reason they laughed is because he used a more slangie version of the term manual laborer, a term most would not use when speaking to large groups of people. It was not because he was a manual laborer.
The term he used I believe closely means 'working stiff who catches the day', which means he works in the early morning. It's not a term you'd normally use in a situation like that. |
Ok, I am glad you explained that. Thank you. That makes more sense anyway. Even people who look down on manual laborers usually have more sense than to show their contempt so openly on national television.
I guess I was too quick to judge her. |

I found that part despicable too. |
Ah yes. Patronise or infantilise anyone with less wealth.
Lower social status also means you must talk with a lisp like a 6 year old, so as not to appear threatening to your superiors. |

Ah, thanks for clearing that up. |

In Korea entertainers are traditionally part of the lower social class. The potential of money has made it slightly acceptable these days, if you make it big. |
That was pretty much everywhere until movies started. Common actors and minstrels were seen as little more than prostitutes, which in truth some were. Playwrights, composers, and those associated with opera or classical music fared a little better. |

| Good try. I dont believe a single thing about the guys story. If this were the Philippines I would. But in Korea? I have never seen kids selling anything in the streets here. |

He's 22, so he spent half his childhood in the 90's. I think it's possible, Korea was a lot different country in the 90's, and before, compared to now. Although I do have some doubts about his story.
Anyways, it was only pre-2002 that I saw desperate adjummas in their food carts trying to grab a hold of you in order to get your business.
However if he's only like 15, then I'd for sure call BS on the story. |

Viewing actors as fairly lowly isn't a Confucian thing is what I'm trying to say. Go back to the 1800s in America and Europe and actors and actresses were not viewed highly of. |

yeah, well lots has changed in 200 years. And in Korea, even in the last 10 and things are still rapidly changing.
like it or not (and some most certainly don't) these days money and fame talks and bullbleep walks.
Didn't modern day philosopher and keen observer of the human condition Tony Montana tell us
first you get the money and then you get the power.

Oh I agree. I was just pointing out that idolizing actors has really only taken place in Korea and the rest of the world in the last 75 years or so. A historical observation. |

| I also get the sense that his story is cooked up for television. Just wait a few months and the Korean netizens might get to the truth. It is too scripted. We all know that reality shows are scripted....expecially in Korea. |

If it's not true, at least put the kid in a drama or something because he'd be a great actor to pull that off, with a great voice to boot.
Sure the hosts are informed ahead of time, but we may not know the whole process.
I say good on him and good luck Let's not be too cynical, right? |

I second this!
I know I need to take the guy's story with a grain of salt but I really hope he wins. If it's not a verifiable story, well, they must have some seriously good script writers because I really did tear up as I watching the vid. Damn onions.... |
