I'm a big fan of 3-Iron (빈집-Bin Jip-Empty Houses) by the same director. Next to no dialogue, but extremely well shot and is quite engaging despite its silence. |
I'd never heard of it, but will check it out. Cheers for that, mate. |

I'm a bit biased, but a couple of Aussie classics- "Two Hands", "Hercules Returns", "The Castle", "Bad Boy Bubby", "Kokoda" and, of course "Mad Max". |
Ever see "Walkabout"? |

Of course. There are many more to go on about- "Picnic at Hanging Rock", "Romper Stomper", "Don's Party"...Do I really need to mention them all? |

Sorry- I might have gotten a bit aggressive there. We didn't have a video player when I was a kid, but my mum brought the one in her department at school home for the holidays. She made me watch "Walkabout" twice, when a perfectly good tape of "Gremlins" went to waste. To be fair, she did use the VCR to introduce me to Monty Python via "Life of Brian", so all's well that ends well. |

Science Fiction ('cause I'm a huge SF nerd):
2001: A Space Oddyssey (classic)
Blade Runner (classic/essentially started the cyberpunk subgenre)
District 9 (will be a classic)
Moon (indie)
Akira (anime/classic)
The Truman Show (underrated/classic/wonderful)
Children of Men (amazing cinematography)
Gattaca (classic/wonderful)
Terminator 2 (classic/much better than the first in my opinion)
Aliens (classic/genre defining)
Equilibrium (underrated/cult classic/no one has seen it and it is actually very good)
The Host (cult classic/Korean)
Star Wars: The Empire Strike Back (classic/best of Star Wars trilogy)
The Matrix (cult classic/huge cultural impact)
Ghost in the Shell (anime/cult classic)
A Clockwork Orange (classic)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (indie/classic -- yes, it really is SF)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (anime/cult classic/nobody can decide if it's genius or idiotic)
The Fifth Element (underrated -- one word: "multipass")
Starship Troopers (cult classic/horrifying/amusing satire)
The Animatrix (The Second Renassance I&II and Beyond)
Twelve Monkeys (cult classic/genre defining)
Jurassic Park (classic/no one has not seen it)
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn (classic)
Minority Report (underrated/I thought it was brilliant)
Cube (indie/classic/Canadian)
Dark City (mind-blowing pre-2000, these days... not so much)
Serenity (underrated/indie/Brilliant if you watch the Firefly series first)
Honourable mentions:
A.I. (Otherwise known as: the movie that would have been a classic if the last thirty minutes or so didn't ruin it)
Donnie Darko (Is this even SF? Does it even have a genre? Great movie that I always recommend to older students who seem interested in foreign movies)
I'll admit that some of these movies aren't actually good but they're all very important. I tried to make the list so you could tell which ones were good and worth watching and which were just worth watching. |

I agree Equilibrium, Gattica and Dark City are underrated. Great movies even if your not into sci fi too much.
Fifth Element was fun to watch. Shawshank is possibly the best movie made in 20 years. |

I have seen all of those movies. I don't agree on the list thought.
some of those movies are not that good, technically, photographically and narratively.
there are so many other movies which need to be on that list. and so many need to come off that list..
The whole nine yards!! really???
can't believe China town in not in the list, regarded as one of the best screenplays to hit the screen. |
I should have made this clear when I posted, it's not my list, and I agree Chinatown should be on there. Along with Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, As Good as it Gets, The Shining, ect...(Jack is awesome)
But I agree with many of the picks, if not most.
There are a bunch I would dump, too. The Ref? Pul-leeeze! |
