I have been working in Korea for a year now and decided to get health insurance. I talked with my employer and they told me I would have to retro pay for the last 12 months (500,000 won) to get it started. This didn't make sense to me, I don't need insurance for the past. Is this Korean law? Is there a place I can read more about government policy?

According to what I was told, you do have to pay for medical insurance retroactively, but you can speak to someone here to confirm
Medical Insurance 02-2071-2505 (english hotline)
If you are signing a new contract, you might be able to start fresh. |

hey dude,
I've just been through a very similar situation with the same thinking "why pay for insurance i never had?". Anyway i decided that yes, i really do need the insurance, so coughed up the cash. heres my story: i was in korea last year until the 14th of august, after a year at ecc. i arrived back on the 31st of december. ecc had paid my insurance until 29th july 2003. now three months into my new contract this year, i had to fork out for the month of august2003, and all of december 2003. because i had left the country for more than 3 months i didnt have to pay the in bebtween months. anway, i found even though i wasnt covered until just last week i still had to pay. luckily my boss was sweet, and is drip feeding my 600,000 wan payment!
anyway, i dont really see why you should pay the full twelve months, up front yourself, usully your boss pays it all in advance for the u[pcoming year and then takes it out bit by bit for you. if he doesnt, thats just being plain mean! just get a mate to ring the insurance company for you for a low down on foriegn policies with insurance. they are differnt, depending on how long you been here and weather ot not you have left for a length of time. hope this helped a bit. take care and good luck.
