Maybe you have never been to the West Coast of the USA. The number of microbrews sold in your basic Safeway grocery store is incredible, especially all the fantastic micros coming out of California, Oregon and Washington State. Go to a beer specialty shop and there's nary a beer on the planet that can't be found, yes, even in Oregon. |

i've been in Korea a while,
it's safe to say Korea is a great country in many ways and of course has its faults like other places do.
Koreans are great at copying an idea and making it cheaper and better.
Koreans are great at copying almost everything from abroad and bring it here and making it good, ok, sometimes not so good.
but regarding the beer. I don't get it..
ALL the beer sucks! I'm sorry but why doesn't Korea hire some experts on beer making, import the right equipments and make some decent beer!!
I am so sick of hite, cass and Ob .. I mean seriously Korea is a very rich country, make great cars, awesome electronics but there beer is not even close to 3rd world countries beer.. |

It's all about the money. No big plans to export and promote K-beer abroad. Therefore, free license to get away with what you can. Face it, Korea just isn't a truly great country. Maybe it'll get there, but not 'till it shows a bit more character, i.e. less profit-oriented for the privileged, more do something for everyone even if your (elite) share ends up a little less. I have heard 'tho that smaller local outfits will be allowed to bottle and sell their brew, which if true would be a step in the right direction, although it would seem to be more bowing to popular consensus rather than stepping up. |

Yes, if you post when you're drunk, you will appear to be functionally illiterate at times. It's better to post when you're sober:) One of my good friends is a horrible speller, but I cut him some slack because he's an intellectual and is well-versed in Korean and Japanese and history. However, being a bad speller, looks bad when you're a teacher.
He was supposed to write: "That's because you're supposed to drink from the bottle. Not!"
I am not a huge fan of Korean beer except for this dark beer I had and Cass Lemon. However, to each his own. A friend of mine and I have a joke. Whenever we see a horrible driver we say, "He just graduated from the Cass school of fine driving". If we were born in Korea, we'd be used to the brew.

I have been to the West coast of the US, I didn't come away thinking wow what amazing beer. However you're really arguing that your local Safeway has a better quality and range of beer than say for example off the top of my head dowtown Bavaria (that's a German region) or I don't know say Antwerp or Prague (again Cities that are not on the West coast of the USA)? I can't believe I am even justifying this? Portland you say? My bad... of course it's the home of beer.* I can't believe you're being totally serious though.
* for those people living in Portland who have never been to Belguim, Holland, Germany, Czech Republic, Britain & Ireland. |

That's really too bad. Maybe you weren't looking, cause the beers are there.
A common myth is that all American beers are watered-down schlock. Patronize any one of a thousand bars around the country and you'll encounter the same old, same old, where Heineken is considered bold and flavorful.
Do a little research and step out of the norm and you will discover a world of carefully crafted beers of all shapes, colors, and styles that will make you slap a stars and stripes magnet to your bumper.

I have not made any negative comments towards the beers of America, I'm just trying to broaden your horizons a little and highlight the world of beers (or just the world?) that exists in these far away lands outside of Portland and Seoul.
The US has some wonderful things but you don't have the best of everything. I think before making sweeping statements you might possibly need to be aware of the competition. |

I lived in Germany for 3 years. I went to 3 consecutive Oktoberfests in Munich.
I've been on beer tours throughout Bavaria stopping at monastaries that still use wooden kegs and wooden mallets to to tap their beer. And if you go on the weekend with all the tourists, you won't get served their double-bock. Why? Guess.......Tourist!
I've been to Pilsen and Prague and drank Urquell by the buckets (literally). I've been to Belgium and the Netherlands. I know all about European beers. They are truly fantastic. I never said they weren't.

I'm not all that familiar with European beers except some common ones and a few stronger and more pricey Belgian ones that some western style places sell. Some of those are almost like wine in alc content and flavor, but they are great, and can give you a glow after just 2 or 3. Would be interested in other countries' beers but if I could I'd be happy just to drink Belgian. Even the common and not really awesome beers like Hoegaarden, Stella, and Leffe, blow almost all Asian beers completely away, and those are the ones they're not really trying to make great, to keep them affordable I guess.

It seems to me that nickwils didn't understand the word "selection" and thought instead that the poster he was quoting meant "beer produced". Cut him some slack though, English probably isn't his native language since he's not American.

| You guys are dragging the thread down. Let's focus on the situation at hand. If you want some good beer in Korea take yourself to Big Rock in Gangnam. They have 8 different beers so at least one should suit your tests. Best beer i've had in Korea yet. |
