| The gum-smacking does suck. Older people are worse. The chewing with their mouth open is becoming less common among younger people though. I notice pretty big difference when eating with Officers in their late 30s compared to conscripts in their early 20s. |

actually, none of the eating sounds and such things bother me nearly as much as the full on clearing of the throat, usually just prior to a huge loogie shooting out of a Korean mouth.
it just makes every one of my nerves tingle, and not in a good way.
one of my coteachers, an adjumma, seems to have certain throat issues, and does this with some regularity, even when we're sitting near each other in an office. Makes me lose my appetite each and every time. |

Being aware that's it's culturally acceptable manners here... and not in Western societies....
does anyone else find the loud chewing sounds that Koreans make while eating, the chewing with the mouths open on display for all to see, and the talking with food in the mouth to be irritating?
Being in an office and constantly hearing someone eat, seeing chewed up food in their mouths, or hearing people having conversations while stuffing food in there mouths is driving me crazy! |
For me, it depends. One friend who used to eat was so loud while eating. It depends on the volume. I can tolerate it to some extent, but if you completely let go and are very loud while eating, it can be annoying. Chalk it up to cultural differences and accept it. Accept that you will be maybe slightly annoyed by it because it's not what you're used to in your culture. In the same vein, there are habits Westerners have the drive Koreans mad, I am sure. I can't think of any off the top of my head.
It's your right to find it annoying...You just have to accept that is what it is..... |

For those of you who think eating like a cow in Korea is ok, because its Korean culture, then you are wrong. Amongst more refined Koreans, it is considered bad manners.
I'm going to step on some toes here, but I'm amazed by the number of Western men here who have Korean wives/girlfriends, who eat like cows. Mouths open, masticating, slurping. It really is gross. Gentlemen, your woman might be your pride and joy, and its not her fault she was raised by peasants in suits, but please teach her some table manners (if applicable).
Now for the how dare you comments! |

This is basically my approach too. Most of it - even the throat-clearing and spitting - doesn't bother me. The only thing that annoys me is one of the women I work with who chews loudly, but I think that might be because she annoys me in general. |

All I can say is there is a vast gulf between slurping your soup and masticating like a cow.
As for manners, this is such a subjective and culture sensitive subject that I would be damn careful about venturing too far with my Emily Post Bible in hand as the ice under your feet is too thin and you will just end up falling through.
With that in mind, up to each of you to deal with table habits as you wish. Just try and avoid calling other people apes, cows, pigs, uncivilized as you try and make your point on manners. |

How dare you!!
IMO, most of the under-40 generation, including my wife, don't eat noisily . As I said earlier, manners are constantly changing in Korea. And it's not because foreigners are telling Koreans to stop the smacking. They just want to adopt more 'global' manners of their own volition.
