Right. There are numerous obstacles (or irritations) placed in the way of foreign instructors.

Did you not love this Journal entry?
"And...if you get a good teaching Job..things are just great!
and ..get those luxury apt with few roomies...ahh its just total fun!
apt these days in seoul are so modern and clean. They got the pools and fitness, 24 assistance...its really nice!!!" http://www.eslcafe.com/jobinfo/asia/sefer.cgi?display:1079216450-2293.txt

rapier and others, don't you have "total fun" in your "luxury apt"?

My apartment is over 15 years old. It has cracks in the wall. The pipes are rusted (red-orange water). The floor heats unevenly. The window frames have gaps that allow air and insects in from the outside. It is very small.

NOT having him front the cost of the airfare was also something that wasn't a smart move. So what if you used a return portion of airfare. WHY should YOU work till the END of your contract to get money back? He is going to earn interest on money you fronted.

Look dude! The hakwan just opened. Who am i gonna call? I did check the blacklists and put a question on this board about his previous hakwan. No flags.

As far as the airfare goes, consider this.... who the *beep* cares about pissy interest on $600. You are anal enough to care about the interest on 600 bucks?

I did do my homework....and like i said before...if u expect me to ask my employer if my apartment is in the hakwan...i might as well ask how many hairs are on his ass, too.

Anyway, i found out today that he DID break the contract... but he still won't give me a release, so i have to do more footwork.

And by the way, i am already wide awake, your tone just makes me want to go back to sleep.

Regardless of what could have been done differently the point is you are in a very bad situation. I just wanted to wish you luck and I hope you get things sorted out soon. It must be really tough just hang in there and take care of yourself. Keep the board updated. Smile

Idiots are born every minute.

No flags huh? The fact that the place JUST opened is the BIGGEST flag out there. Guess you don't read these boards...where people in the past few months have talked about getting laid off, fired or having their hakwon close down.

600 bucks is all for airfare? If it is that cheap why not just throw in the towel. Airfare to my hometown 1 way is around 800,000 won.

I don't care about interest on that much money as much as having the owner screw ya out of it because the fire you or go bankrupt.

I am smart enough to know that your director WILL go bankrupt. ARE you smart enough to read the signs?

Guess not or you wouldn't have posted about getting screwed.

Hope the other clueless out there read this and start waking up to the signs of a CRAP deal.

NEW hakwon is one of them.

Pink is right, although I don't fault you for joining with a new hagwon. I've made some mistakes in Korea too, and signing with a new business was one of them. I was promised the world just before finishing my first contract with another school. I worked 1 week for free as "training", got my "blue paper" from them and took it back home to the USA for me while I was on vacation. I even bought 200,000 won worth of books for the owner (he did eventually reimburse me though). Then, the school cancelled, saying it didn't have enough students. So I had to fly back on my ticket to Korea with NO JOB.

That was just the beginning of my problems last summer.

What I've learned: Only work for a start-up on a part-time basis, and get paid weekly.

Because at the end of your contract you boss has to pay you your last month's pay + your bonus + return airfare + your airfare over. That's about $5000. Do you really want to have an unsecured $5000 loan to a Korean businessman? I really wish there wasn't the end of year bonus and pay was a little higher every month, having that much money outstanding at the end of your contract makes it too tempting for bosses to *beep* us over.

I am not going to throw in the towel, because then i run the risk of being denied for a new E2. I want to remain in my city with my name in tact. The owner has threatened me with all sorts of things if i run, and i take it seriously. Even though i know i can fight such threats, i am still upholding my end of the deal.
If you remember my original post, Jude Judy, you would see that i only wished to know the best way to get out of the contract with my future prospects intact.
Also, you obviously DO care about the interest on the airfare, because you said so yourself.

And, lets see, the signs that this Hakwan will go bankrupt?
- they ran a previous joint, untroubled for 4 years. I checked.
- they closed it to travel for a year....i saw the photos.
- they opened a Hankuk U. franchise, which has an excellent reputation.
- they opened the hakwan right in the center of the most affluent neighborhood in the city. There are 15 high-rises filled with doctors and lawyers. There are only 2 competing hakwans in the area.
- The hakwan has been open for 2 weeks and is aleady at capacity for enrollment. That's why I was teaching 8 hours a day for a better salary.

The owner is simply an fuckhead trying to vaccuum up all the dough he can. It could happen just as easily with an older hakwan that is headed for trouble....as many are now.

yeah...you sure ARE smart enough to read the signs...
once again, listen more...speak less.

Do not get your alien registration card processed. If your ARC is not processed within 3 months, the visa is cancelled. It may seem like a long time, but at least you would have something to threaten the director with.

If you have already done that. Tell your director that you refuse to teach until you get a satisfactory place. Tell him that you will go stay with friends in a different city and he can contact you when he has provided what he you want.

I can sympathize with you for getting screwed over. But you need to stand up for yourself and take some real action. Going to the labor board will help, but I don't know how you can win.

And, Honestly, why do you care about your reputation with some director who is looking to screw you over. Forget about your reputation and get things straightened out.

I think Fubar has the best advice. Where did you sign your contract? If you signed it abroad, then it is null and void. It is only a sample contract and you have no problem. Leave and find a new job. Screw the reputation shit. You can stil find work.
Just let this be a lesson to you. Don't sign a contract untill you actually arrive here and make sure you read over every last bit and are completly aware of your rights. Too many people just scan their contracts and then sign on. If you pay your way over, then you have a lot of bargaining leverage. Use it.

Be careful. You are in the coutry illegally the second this happens if you don't tell them you're letting it expire. I did this (just let it expire) once and when I left the coutry I got nailed by immigration. Nothing big, no fine, but it's a mark on my record.

Thats not necessarily true. If the contract was counter signed (boss and employee) its legal and not only a sample....

However, the main party here: the OP, should proceed and get a release letter since he wants to keep working in his city with his name intact.
He shoudl be commended for taking the legal path out of his job or at least for trying to.

fcuk legally.

how does the law help you when you're showering on your balcony?

do what you have to do. do a runner when you get paid. come back on your tourist visa. if you've kept a low profile (i.e. minimal picketing) you won't have a problem getting back in.
