WARNING!: Korean recruiter: [Mod Edit name] of UBC consulting (Mod Edit, can't put out e-mail contact) / School: Langcon/Avalon English Academy (Gwangju, South Korea)
I thought I would alert everyone to the dangers associated with someone who recruited me in April of 2010 (I finished my contact in April of 2011)
This recruiter is 'Sally' of 'UBC Consulting' (based in Busan)
I hate to use such a strong word, but it is in fact true to say this recruiter literally lied to me through her teeth regarding this position from start to finish.
I spent a year living in an apartment above a hogwan, with a terrible boss who treated all staff with zero respect (infact I was insulted at times)
Whilst I had a great time in Korea generally, my experience of my first hogwan was a simply awful one.
I just wouldn't want any other potential teacher to fall for the lies this lady puts out to the world (it seems she also uses, what I can only imagine to be, a series of 'fake' references of how wonderful a recruiter she is).
Furthermore, this recruiter had fed me such a range of lies, and must therefore be running so scared of teachers she has recruited - that when I tried to contact her about some simple flight arrangements towards the end of my contract - she literally(!) hung up on me twice - once she realised who I was.
If there is anyway everyone can spread the word regarding this terrible recruiter and school, this would be much appreciated. |

O.P.
1. Good for you for sticking it out.
2. Why did you stay there? You've only reassured the owner that she can treat people like crap and get away with it. |

Why on earth are you contacting your recruiter about your flight home? That's like going to a laundromat to buy a sandwich.
I'd be hanging up if I was her, too. |

This is what I asked when the OP put the same post in the travel forum. It makes zero sense. |

Why didn't you pull a runner?
Doesn't make sense why people stay at these places for a year.
Get your money and get out. There are better jobs out there.... |

As moderators, we also have rules. You are not supposed to put the name of the recruiter or someone's out there like that. We have let someone post about schools, but not providing telephone numbers, e-mails, and names of individuals. The said user only registered today with that account and then spams all the boards. We don't tolerate that. He may have been abused for a year at a hagwon, but it doesn't mean he/she should abuse our rules/site.
It's not the recruiter's business to make sure you get the flight ticket. It's the job of the hagwon wanjangnim (principal). The recruiters in many cases have to simply get foreigners to work for hagwons and collect commissions. Whether the hagwon principal or owner is honest, is often something they overlook because they want their bottom-line met, but some recruiters are better than others.
Caveat Emptor.... |

I used the recruiter mentioned in the OP for my first job in Korea when I started here 3 years ago. I dealt with several different recruiters, most of whom were just looking to collect a quick commission. She answered all of my questions and ended up getting me a job with a great boss at a hagwon in Daejeon.
When that job ended, I found another job that was advertised on this site without a recruiter, but I would have gladly used her again. |
