What exactly does the passport establish that a driver's license doesn't? I don't really like carrying my passport around at night, especially when it's got visas I need in it...I don't have an ARC anymore which I always used to carry, but I'll be coming through Korea in a couple weeks for work and was planning on maybe hitting up some Hongdae clubs (the kind that card) - what's the verdict on whether my US driver's license will be okay?

Probably fine, but the passport is a bit more reliable, as they know what it is.

True.

Case in point - I have a Korean Driver's License.

Ah, but a Korean Driver's License has one's Korean National Identification number or Resident Alien Registration number on it. Those indicate one's nationality. That's not the case for my California Driver License.

--------------------------

I'm still waiting on an explanation of how it's acceptable to ban an entire group of people (and this banning including nationality) for the actions of an obvious minority of the group. And save the "well deserved reputation for bad acts" blather. For one thing, it's merely anecdotal. For another, it's not accurate.

How does your Alien Registration Number indicate your nationality?

Certainly the California DMV knows your nationality.

Just to point out something here. I know you are talking about clubs. However be aware that any cop on the street here has the power to ask for your ID, and if you are not carrying your ARC...that's a 100,000 won fine.

Sure this is very unlikely in the extreme to happen. I've been here 10 years and only been asked to show ID twice. Both times however I had my ARC with me which they gave a cursory inspection and then waved me on. But accidents do happen...it's also proof that you are a registered foreigner here and not an illegal alien.

similar case in almost every other country. You're supposed to be carrying your passport on you at all time, or a copy of one. The local citizens usually have a national ID card they are also supposed to carry. I never do. Been stopped a couple of times. Knowing the language probably helped, and I navigated the issue easily without a problem.
I view it as a basic intrusion on my rights, so screw them all and their fines.

(of course, I do then realize they have the right to haul my butt in into a local police station to "establish my identity" if they see such need, but I'm never in situations where my "identity" needs to be established by legitimate and uncorrupted law enforcement)

The the OP, I guess it depends.

I've been perfectly fine with my drivers ID.

Then again I don't look like some roided up GI with a crew cut and biceps ripping out of my tshirt waiting to take off the first guy that looks at me wrong Laughing

Any more questions?

lol

r u being carded for looking too old, too young or just standard policy for everyone?

which clubs?

I'm not about to start walking around carrying my ARC much less my passport while going out. Recipe for disaster or at least major pain in the behind.

1) You should always carry your ARC. That's your ID here.

2) Prior to getting your ARC, carry a photocopy of your passport.

3)A lot of the clubs in Hongdae need to see an ARC to prove that you're not military. It's standard policy for everyone, males in particular, even if said males have hair down to their shoulders and couldn't possibly be military.

No. I've never had problems with just my ID and I'm 99% sure this is BECAUSE I don't look like the military.
