Perhaps I didn't make myself clear (or perhaps I feel myself more important than I should  ), but I've committed myself and about 50 or so close friends (oh, and about 100 or so other blog followers and friends in journalism) from visiting the place.
So, the end result is that the bar at least won't be on (my) people's top priorities and, yes, you've effectively proven your point.
As for the people who are so hungry for fried chicken and beer snacks that they can't be bothered to consider service, I say more power to them. Classless people do no harm; they only make us look better. |

Yes, having lived in China, Japan, & Korea for close to 10 years on and off as a journalist for a US-based newspaper amongst other things, one builds a pretty good network. In China & sometimes in Korea we meet up and raid places for drinks and partying. At times it can take up half the bar. Honestly, it's more of a China thing foreigners do.

Now, I also was there that night. It was the Manchester United vs Barcelona game, correct? I also saw these guys getting kicked out. But I also remember them yelling/screaming, dancing around without looking were the staff enters and exits the bar, and going in front of the screen a lot. While it was amusing at first, it got highly annoying to the people that were just there to see the game.
Like I said, I don't know the guy, and it's not a bar that I go to. But those guys were kicked out for legitimate reasons. |
Amusing yes, rapidly getting annoying, yes, definitely, but they were harmless! They were quite drunk, but not the least bit aggressive, just completely clueless about what they were doing. The people I was with were sitting at the seats right at that end of the bar, and they went up to those guys 2-3 times to ask them to move. But you really think they created that much of a disturbance to warrant being treated that way? They were just enjoying their night out a bit too much.
FYI, these guys were able to speak enough English to understand exactly what we were saying to them, even when drunk, so no issues decoding there. |

Pretty sure kicking out annoying customers of a specific skin color does not fall under the realm of racism.
You really think if they were doing this in a chicken joint full of people that the old lady would just shake her head and think, "kids will be kids"? lol |

Heh, now we can do a battle of rhetorical questions! I just wanted to clear up that the racist incident I was talking about referred to something that happened to some Trinidadian diplomats a few months back, and a policy in place at Sam's barring patrons of Arican descent. I wish I could get better confirmation about this incident, but I just haven't been able to as of yet.
Now, I definitely agree that kicking out annoying customers of any kind is much appreciated. But from what I saw happen, right in front of my own eyes, there was no justification for the way the owner treated them. The poster I reponded to before saw it differently, but I honestly feel this was completely over the top, utterly disgraceful. What they did was far less "offensive" than the antics of some Westerners on an average night. From what I have seen and heard, these kinds of confrontations do happen regularly enough there, but I get this feeling that the owner wouldn't have reacted so quickly and aggressively if those customers were Westerners (he didn't when another patron stood at the same place later on.) And if you had been treated in the same way, I'm sure you would have been hard-pressed to maintain your cool - I know I would have (and in so saying, I would probably have my butt in a sling right now because the owner is...sizeable...)
My turn for that rhetorical question - Have you BEEN to the average Korean chicken joint? Quite often there are some really animated people in there, and this is without the benefit of a soccer game to add to the mood. Despite this, sometimes those ajummas are the loudest ones in there. |

| In a nutshell, Sam Ryan's and 3 Alley Pub have lost a lot of regulars due to the owner but people continue to go there. You decide if it's worth it or not. |

I don't go to Itaewon much but I've been to Sam Ryan's a few times.
OP doesn't seem to be trolling and this thread has convinced me enough to take my business elsewhere. I can't stand racists. |

Fair enough, I haven't kept track of who posted which story. The Trinidad thing hasn't had another side posted and it's known that folks from Africa - I'd venture to say African-American military and black teachers are not held to the same negative standard - don't have the easiest time getting into bars in Itaewon. I'll assuredly grant you that point.

Again, my only retort would be that the other patron was just standing there.
What I would surmise is that the two guys were bouncing around and bothering the staff. Just as you point out that you would've been hard-pressed to stay cool had it been you on the receiving end (as would have I), I feel if I were the owner of an establishment, it is an absolute priority to ensure that my employees are capable of working without harassment or difficulty. If those guys were upsetting the employees behind the bar and they complained to the owner, he's got to do something. And if they don't listen, he's going to react.
Now, I'm not trying to stick up for the guy for personal reasons. 3 Alleys/Sam Ryan's always has somebody griping about the place, which is enough reason for those who have a bad time to find somewhere more willing to accept their cash. But I do think that sometimes, sometimes, people are overly sensitive about their treatment there. The fast refill issue is one of major contention, and again, I try to look at it from the business end, where the owner wants people drinking, not nursing a piss-warm swig for an hour. Anyway, sorry for the sidetrack.

Sure I have. And I've seen people cross the line in them and get the ban hammer dropped. Granted, Koreans have a great deal more tolerance for drunken idiocy.  |
