I plan on accepting the offer at the Seocho branch of Direct English (Seocho, although it's about 1.5 blocks from the Kangnam subway station). Anybody have any information about this position (either directly or indirectly, word-of-mouth, etc)??

I've read several of the blacklists (thanks Lost Seoul) and searched on this forum (again, helpful information), but I was wondering about this branch in particular. Especially about the split-shifts - will they really only last for 3-4 months before being able to teach block scheduling? And also, how realistic is it to find nearby housing for W5,000,000 key money and W500,000 rent a month (or is there an amount of key money that can be paid and not have to pay the monthly rent)?

Okay, thanks to all who have anything to say.

hey, first of all, thanks for replying . . .

well, i don't know if they've increased the amount recently, but i was told (and the contract says) "up to" W5mil. but i've also heard from other people that it's not possible (or very hard at least) to find a place even w/in 15-20 minutes for W5mil key money and W500k per month rent. but then the school of course says it's easy, so . . .

any knowledge about this? do you work or live in the area???

It could be easy, but the type of housing that you will be getting will leave much to be desired.

Ask the school what size of apartment you can get for that kind of money and how new the place will be.

Hey

Well a friend of mine was looking for a single studio apt with 10 mill key and the rent was still at least 300,000. That was in Yeoksam and u dont need to be that close; I and friends live in Nakseongdae and their key is more like two or three key and 450,000 a month. Prob best to do that.

regardinfg the former; the room didnt even have a window. Where i live is 10 mins on the subway and thats not much hastle to get to work. (apart from it being the WORST subway line due to crowdedness Rolling Eyes )

yeah- just keep in mind that the commute plus those split shifts can be killer. I remember getting the 5:45 am out of Sadang, all too well.

Get a place in Sadang on the hill at the foot of Kwan Nak Saa (mountain) They're building small apts out the ass and you should be able to find somthing in that price range. If not, then I guess you should ask Pagoda for some more gash! I used to live in Sadang at BCM tower and work at BCM Gangnam...about 2 min walk to Pagoda. Smile
