You sure about that? I'm sure Canada would give Korea a run for it's money for worst street food. You only have maybe 3 choices hot dogs, fries or pretzels. |
OK, only where I've traveled - even if a lot of the times there are overlap with things like sausages, kebabs, tacos, skewers, etc.
Still, in Korea, the only thing I can stomach are the chicken skewers. The western street food (hotdogs, hotdogs covered with fries) are all nasty versions, ddeok bokki is boring, odeng is a pathetic imitation of Japanese oden (which is admittedly pretty good but not too common over there). The only exception is Itaewon. and I haven't tried the taco truck in Hongdae. The hours for that are way too limited for me to consider it valid street food though.
I imagine in cosmopolitan cities like vancouver or toronto, there must be something going on? No? |

There's different kinds of duck. It's up to you to choose the one the beat fits your taste.
The most common form is grilled like Samgyupsal. There's also a variation of this that's marinated in Gochujang. The latter is much better in my mind.
There's smoked duck served inside a pumpkin. This is great. But you have togo to a well known place.
There's a variation of duck similar to Beijing duck. Cooked in a clay pot with various vegetables with a nice crispy skin. This is the best |

| Duck is everywhere in Thailand. I can't stand the stuff. I used to love roasted game duck, but not the stuff they hang and sell in the east. For domesticated food chicken is a lot better. |

Best way to enjoy excellent Korean duck: hit the road and check out some of the rural restaurants. There are some real gems out there!
Same thing with meat, in the Gyungju area for example there are some amazing beef places. |
LOL, that's just about the worst thing you can do to find decent restaurants that serve duck. |

Ever try it?
There are regions that serve amazing meat in Korea. These restaurants are typically run by people who raise the cattle or birds themselves.
Anyway, good luck out there and if you prefer not to do this, all I can say is you will miss out on some pretty darn great restaurants. |

| so what do you do? rent a car and drive down rural roads hoping to come across a duck restaurant? after 6 hours of searching and not finding one, go back home and eat hot dog flavored duck. |

Duck restaurants are definitely very hit or miss. There's a great one not too far from where I live that has it's own smoker that does duck, moksal, and "sausage". The duck and moksal are delectable, the "sausage" is about as good as a smoked hot dog.
If you can find a place that'll have you grilling fresh duck breast like it was samgyupsal is pretty tasty, too.
Other duck restaurants I've been to, yeah, the duck is so processed it might as well be baloney.
Some butcher shops sell whole, fresh duck, and if you've got an oven so you can roast it yourself it's pretty hard to go wrong. |

Right.
OR.
Ask your Korean friends, check out the ton of Korean websites that deal with restaurants as a lot of these places advertise there since Koreans do travel to a place to eat there if its rep is good. Then find people to travel with, either someone with a car or you poll your money and rent one and make a trip out of it.
OR
Sit where you are, whine and complain.
OR
If traveling outside of your city is too much for you, check out the restaurants in your city...again ask your Korean friends (you must have at least 1 right). Try some of the origogi bulgogi places, some of these are really good.
All up to you buddy. |
