Korea, like India, puts too much command and control in the field. They let lower ranking officers make calls they shouldn't be making.
I understand the reasons for this. If you have an enemy that could attack under any circumstance by way of many different methods, and many of those methods are unconventional, you want more people to have the ability to respond faster. But this usually works better with a better trained and career type military. Not a conscripted force that gets a months worth of training before being given very big guns. |

The K-2 rifle is a hand-held machine gun. They basically took pot shots at a plane. |

The correct protocal in that situation would've been to report first before taking any action. The article doesn't state if the CO did so but nobody is taught to shoot first, report later unless fired upon (at least in my division). Perhaps he did report the situation to higherups and was told to fire. Or maybe he was hungry for a medal. Since the article doesn't reveal much, it could've been a couple of conscripts trying to be heroes and making the call for themselves.
Whatever happened, the guys didn't really think things through before firing at an aircraft without identifying it, firing at it with weapons that are ineffective against aircraft, and therefore exposing their position needlessly.

Technically, its an assault rifle, very different from a machine gun. It would be stupid to think you can take down an aircraft with such weapons (if you do, you're one lucky bastard). One funny thing about this article is that it says the K-2 has a range of less than 500 meters (most modern ARs have a range between 400-500) yet we're told in basic training that the K-2 can effectively engage targets at over 600m. While that's possible, the problem is that we're also taught how to engage aircraft with these weapons. I guess these guys actually believed their drill instructors when they were told, "It's the best gun in the world! Because its Korean!" |

No it doesn't, it says that the plane was about 500 meters out of the range of the K-2 rifle's range.
<plane distance> = <K-2 rifle range> + 500 m |

Korean military hasn't had any actual combat experience since the early 1970's. When they do get a chance (Iraq/Afghanistan), its a case of lets hide in the safest place where we don't have to do any shooting.
Apparently the military needs the permission of a soldiers mother, before being posted overseas.
Sorry Minsu can't fight because his mommy said so. |

You shouldn't trust mass media reports regarding Korean military at face value, good or bad, especially when there was an 'incident.' |

If it goes full-auto, then it's not incorrect to refer to it as a machine gun. |

Sounds to me like a couple of idiot kids who maybe got ahold of some Soju or something.
I'm sure they're the butt of every joke on base. |

Do they assign just any kid to one of those border posts and give'em a gun? |

It wasn't near the border, but south of ICN. Commercial airplanes always approach from the south and depart flying north and bank sharply west all of the time at ICN.
Not sure about the coasts, but I've heard that the guys on the DMZ are at least 6 feet tall. Probably an attempt to intimidate the smaller NK guards.
So if one of your male students is close to 6 feet tall, you know where he might end up for his service. |

Anyone who has played a FPS game knows a plane can't be taken out with a rifle
