I know of some people who are volunteering at an English camp this summer. Before wrongly busting their bubble, I wanted to get all the info on this. The immigration website keeps on giving me a trojan upon opening, so I can't go there right now to check it out. Is it still illegal to volunteer without permission from k-immi?
edit: trojan"horse". apparently the Iliad and Odyssey are taking over my brain.

Oh boy. They aren't friends, just district acquaintances, but I'd hate for them to get in trouble. I suppose I can break the news and let them decide what do to. |

actually, you don't need permission from k-immi. you need permission from your current employer. then you can go to immi and register the second work place. |

Yeah, K-immi, and a lot of other countries, impose the same conditions on volunteering as regular employment as far as immigrants are concerned - the argument is that an immigrant in a volunteer capacity is effectively taking a potential job away from a local.
I'm not sure why anyone would want to volunteer at a regular summer camp if they can get paid for it, unless they are just wanting to bypass the visa hoops in order to get teaching experience ... They might want to consider things like they might not get any form of employee protection such as accident in the workplace coverage etc. |

A few years ago, some folks volunteer teaching at an orphanage were deported. A group of foreigners doing sketch comedy in Busan were detained and investigated for a month for their actions, too.
There was a form to fill out for immi along with a 60,000 KRW fee for "actions outside the visa."
Then, when the oil spill happened at Taean Haean, immi said no form or fee was needed.
Since then, people have volunteered without problem. Getting the employer's permission has never been a part of the process.
Best bet: Call 1345 and ask the horse's mouth. |
