it's illegal to work on the 15th since all our contracts should say all national holidays are off. If my school tells me im working im telling them to *beep* off quiting, punching the owner in the head a few times and going back to canada. There's no reason any of us should have to work on that day.
It was declared a national holiday by the government. The guy who has to work becasue the other schools are open on his street? that's the dumbest version of korean logic i've ever heard |
Taking this a little hard aren't we? |

| You're really quitting over this one issue? I would hope that there's more of a story behind your decision than this "working on election day" fuss. |

My contract says the same thing. I could legally not come to work on Thursday but I would rather stay on my boss's good side. Plus, it really isn't that big a deal. |

Legal vacation time is 10 days, plus national holidays.
One day is about ten percent of your whopping ten days paid vacation. I would fight for a single day added to these ten.
But of course, if you're not voting you can work. |

| A Thursday which normally wouldn't have been a national holiday seems to be an awfully small detail to be getting worked up about. |

Yes...I'm off, but my school is taking a bunch of students on a field trip and I kinda have to go.
So...does this mean I have the day off? |

Depends on how much "kinda" and how much "have to". |

Yeah that's my feeling. It's not like it's christmas and they're expecting you to work or it's a stat day you expected to get when signing a contract. It's not like I can argue I need the day off to vote. Also we already had April 5 off and I think there's another one in May.
I guess for some here it's the straw that breaks the camel's back. For me, my school isn't fully evil and it falls under the "pick your battles" category. |

shawn you're not helping man. It has nothing to do with working one day. It has to do with how korean people think. My boss has broken the contract so many times I can't even count them.
Most foreigners in these stupid schools wouldnt stand up for themselves if their balls were conected to live electrodes placed in acid while they were sitting in an electric chair. Because this is what their boss wants to see, so the foreigner jumps and only asks how high.
No *beep* wonder owners thing they can do anything they want to us. we have no rights anyways here.
This country has worn me down and actaully made me pretty racist against some koreans. If someone stares at me on the street I yell at them. If someone bumps or pushes me I push them back etc etc etc balh blah blah |

well, the boss man and his misses put the thing together. And they asked me if i would hang out with the group.
the good thing is that it's going to be totally free. some parent of our school is making me my lunch.
plus, we are going to a place that i have never been before. some park or something. Hopefully, it won't be that bad.
I mean...what else would I do? Probably wake up...and then drink the day away. |

I know schools like to give that "you don't need to vote" line, but really, if you follow that line of reasoning, we shouldn't get any Korean holidays off except maybe Christmas and New Year's. When was the last time you had a big Chusok celebration with your family? Did you plant a tree on Arbor Day? We get holidays off because it's in our contract, not because they pass some test of cultural relevancy.
I'm lucky, because I get Thursday off. At my last school, I didn't get Presidential Election day off, though. I agree, it's not worth quitting over, unless it's the final straw. I've definitely had those times when I've thought, "If they do just one more thing to upset me today, I'm going to walk." |
