Gyodong Island is about 40 km (straight line) away from ICN. Those soliders were somewhere south of ICN. |

Technically, its an assault rifle, very different from a machine gun. |
If it goes full-auto, then it's not incorrect to refer to it as a machine gun. |
A machine gun is a support weapon designed for sustained, effective automatic fire. Assault rifles are not designed for sustained, effective automatic fire. |

I suggest you have a look at the links below. It's close alright, real close. Most news sites won't mention the actual proximity. Wonder why that would be...

Something is fishy here... commercial planes should be nowhere near Gyodong Island (30 km at it's closest). Planes going into ICN approach from the south. Even flights originating from north of NK will fly far from NK airspace then swing around way south of ICN. And planes departing bank west maybe within a few kilometers northwest of ICN.
Take a look at google maps, ICN is not that close to Gyodong Island maybe 35km at it's closest points.
Maybe the soldiers did shoot at an NK plane and this story is just some cover story. |

| It might well be a cover story, which brings up the very real possibility that a lot of "official" reports of "unprovoked" attacks could also be just as reliable. Be that as it may, if you can imagine military exercises being conducted anywhere near this area with large ships, attack helicoptors, fighter jets, etc, you can see how things could get real dicey real quick, in which case something has to give. |

I think the cover story for how the boat captain got shot by somali pirates (despite having bullets in his body from Korean commandos) was more creative though. It had more imaginative merit.

No it doesn't, it says that the plane was about 500 meters out of the range of the K-2 rifle's range.
<plane distance> = <K-2 rifle range> + 500 m |
The effective range is 500m, but the maximum distance the bullet travels is about 2.5km.

I hope they were referring to the latter measurement when describing the incident. If not, there were bullets shooting through the air around the plane, which is a definite concern, inaccurate though they were. |
