Surprised to see the two of you (Patrick and gadfly) get more than a one-liner out of Ramen. 헐!
To some degree I agree with both opinions. I have known (at the start) a fantastic coordinator get closer to becoming burned out- she held a conference where she told us NETs that she didn't want us calling her to resolve disputes rather it was our job to read the contract (I agree) and deal with our school personally (disagree). Well then, why is she there? Her position could instead be used to give some L1s another year or give a school w/o a FT the shot at having one. The concept of a liason/coordinator is great but when they dont do anything (D@!N 배) then its a money pit.
Edit: parts in parentheses |
Well, it IS your job to read your own contract, and not bother her with stuff that is already clearly spelled out for you...but yeah, if you are supposed to be getting something that you are not, or if they are not doing something they are supposed to do, then yeah, it is HER job to kick that up the ladder....
She does sound seriously burnt out already...but her refusal to be in the middle may be a protest intended to inconvenience management as much as teachers...it is even tougher to do the job if you are unappreciated from BOTH sides...so she is most likely trying to send THEM a message, via complaining teachers.... |

I don't think its a terribly bad job. They've got the same pay grade as the FTs. They don't have to teach, do riot control of rowdy kids, work with crazy co-teachers (They swap them for crazy bosses), do winter or summer camps, and all they do is deal with complaining newbies. Most of which they've already dealt with by making District Head Foreign Teachers.
Compared to the worst situation or slightly below average run of the mil ps job, being a Coordinator doesn't seem all that bad. |

Most of them are assigned to work at a public school. They go into the Kyo-yukcheon once a week and talk to a supervisor. |

A kyo-yukcheon is just the main office. The only ones in there are the school administrators / support staff. At worst, they'd be cold to the coordinators. Doubtful though, coordinator's outrank them, since they're from the head office. That doesn't seem all that bad unless they've also got to double check all the school's self reported numbers. (Now that'd just be torture) |

Yea that's probably true at the main office but, at the school level. Rank would be determined by location. |

nobody wants thankless job but they take it anyway perhaps blinded by extra 200k a month.
no one can force you to take the job. they asked me twice for it and i turn it down while i've watched 5 come and go because they didn't have the spine to say no.
gadfly sounds like he is one of those useless and hopeless coordinators forced to take the job. if you are, sorry. if not, good for you. |
Not to mention that some people may take this position for career reasons. You also seem to like to assume a lot about people. How they hell do you know the reasons those 5 people took the position?
hahhaaha...yikes! make a career as a ps coordintor? no thanks. and i know because some of them told me why.
Gadfy made a very good point about your posts as well. Perhaps its just you posting on an online forum and has nothing to do with how you are in your day to day worklife but the job you discuss is usually made hard and difficult because of teachers who love whine, complain and love to crap in the sanbox, giggle and marvel at their little pile of dung.
perhaps, but that's a utter bs. the job is made difficult because the job is designed that way. no one seems to know what their responsibilties are because there's no job description. someone in the other thread said, "coordinators are nothing but glorified receptionists." also, those that were coordinators warned me about ever becoming one. perhaps, this thread will enlighten naive future ps coordinators to think twice before taking on the job.

Ok thanks for completely missing the point.
Well done on that account. |

| I think many overseas Koreans get recruited into these jobs and tend to hate them. Anyone who has taken it has been pretty eager to get out of it. They basically have no authority and have to ask their superiors. I doubt they want to deal with a few hundred teachers all the time asking about trivial things, unless they have some kind of personal relationship with you as a favor. I suspect these overseas Koreans who are westernized really hate working in a very tradional Korean environment. |

A principal is pretty high up the totem pole. He outranks a local education office supervisor and maybe possibly even a provincial supervisor. Some of it official and some of it unofficial because of age status, etc. Only the very top officials at a provincial ed office outrank a principal, along with a superintendant. |

Yes, principals are pretty high in the education chain. You guys should observe the politics in private-public schools when a principal, or VP, are going to retire. Fascinating, it borders on a full-fledged election campaign among the teachers.
From what my CT told me, a VP ranks the same as the local education office head. And age is pretty important too, I remember my VP asking my CT to talk to the supervisor that was responsible for FT's, and the first question he asked was how old the two were before delegating the task to him. |
