I just watched the season finale of HBO's Game of Thrones. It was pretty good. I felt that last week's episode was a lot better though. I highly recommend the series. The first two or three episodes were pretty slow, but after that it really picked up. I've been watching it every Monday since it started and now I'm sad that I'll have to wait for the next season to start. It stayed remarkably true to the book, too, which is noteworthy.

Has anybody else been watching this show? What do you think about it?

It does a better job of staying true to the books than just about anything else I've ever seen. That said: read the books. I feel that much of the hidden mystery that you need to unravel for yourself is going to be lost in the show going forward.

I intend to read the books first.

Just watched the finale yesterday too. Great show.

I second the idea that you should read the books too though. While the show stayed very close to the books, as has been mentioned, the books just give so much more detail and flesh out the world so much more.

Actually re-reading the series now, the next novel is coming out next month I think.

Yeah, the books really help you understand the world and the history behind whats going on so much better. That being said, the series is pretty fantastic and does about a good a job of telling the story as could be hoped for. You can nitpick here and there but on the whole I was thrilled with it.

Yeah, I am in the middle of the second book at the moment and I have the finale on my laptop, so you could say that the show has caught my imagination. I am looking forward to the new book in July and the next season. Great show, and am glad to have discovered them this year.

The other thing I like about reading the books first is that they're excellent at making you absolutely despise a character, but later making you appreciate where the person is coming from. The show, though excellent, suffers from a lack of the strict viewpoint style employed in the books. As such, some of the characters who come across as pure evil for the first couple books are relatively sympathetic in the show, even at this early juncture. The books do a better job of messing with your emotions and forcing you to second guess yourself.

Yeah, certain characters they have to give you subtle hints as to what their deal is rather than the book just laying it out for you. So far the acting has been pretty strong bringing that stuff across though. I am very much looking forward to the Hound getting more screen time.

yeah was good, they do stay VERY true to the books, which is good.

it has been picked up for the second season so that's good.

the acting is getting better too, the finale I felt could have been a little better compared to episode 9. but still enjoyable and recommend the series to those who enjoy fantasy style books and movies.

Does the first season only deal with the first book?

I'm interested in reading the books now thanks to the show, just not the first one since I already know what happens.

So if I were to start with book two, would it lead off where season one left off?

The first season began and ended in the exact same spots as the first book. They intend to do the same with the second and possibly third seasons as well, though they won't be able to once they get to the fourth book as the story splits (fourth and fifth books happen concurrently due to way too many viewpoint characters to deal with in a single volume). If you started with the second book you would likely do fine, but I recommend reading the first book to get a better handle on the back story and the world in which everything happens. The drama is good in the show, but without the back story provided by internal monologue it's kind of hard to figure out what's really going on.

A good Venn diagram in regards to the show:

I thought that certain events from the second book were included in the show, minor events but still a few things seemed to be a little out of whack.

I read the first book and never read further. Haven't even considered watching the show. I'm an ardent fan of sci-fi and fantasy (more the former) too. Dunno why Martin just doesn't do it for me.

I take exception to this chart. Arya belongs in the idiot category.

I started reading the book after watching the first few episodes. I couldn't wait to find out what happens next and that's when I picked up the book. The show was so fucking good and the book is even better. I really love the show and I can't wait until the next season.
