headed there on friday for 18 days, 3rd trip there. Lonely Planet's classic route is a good one and is set up for 11 days, however if you fly the legs instead of bus/train you can spend more time at each location, start in Yangon couple of days there, then how you do the route is up to you. Mandalay for a couple of days, the city itself is so-so, do the 3 ancient cities around there, then Bagan, hire a horse cart for a couple of days and then hire a car for a half day at Mt Popa, finally get over to Inle Lake up in the Shan hills, its nice break from the heat of the rest of the country. You can do the upcountry route in any order, first time I did Mandalay then Bagan and over to Inle, last trip I started at Inle
People say take the bus as its cheaper and the money stays more or less in private hands but its very slow, 8-10 hours (overnight) to Mandalay, 8-10 hours Mandalay-Bagan, 12 grueling hours Bagan-Inle then 17-18 hours back to Yangon. Air Mandalay has a pass for like $250 you get all the flights, only downsides is the airport at both Mandalay and Inle are a long ways from things and you are looking at $20 cab to them. If you fly you might also be able to squeeze in Mymo or Hsipaw from Mandalay.
