Itaewon was once synonymous with dark alleys, crime and shoddy souvenirs. But the neighborhood has transformed itself in recent years with hip cafes, trendy bars and posh restaurants with cuisine from around the world, and it now draws people from all walks of life. |

I lived in Itaewon up until a month ago. I'm qualified to bash it.
Food = yes, everything else = no. |

Too bad the vast majority of people who go there are, in fact, Korean. |

foreigners turned it into what it is today, Koreans come to Itaewon for the fact foreigners are there. but slowly it's going to become Koreanized where most foreigners will move to HBC, Kyungdi dan, and bolwaldong,
foreigners want a place away from most things Korean, every ccountry has their china towns, little italy, Korea town.. Itaewon was a mix of everything.
but I predict 10 years from now, it will just be kangnam 2!
and most of the Expats will find some other slums to call home. |

Itaewon is a bit ugly, but it still has the best pubs in Seoul. |

Actually, I think foreigners just want a place where they can afford the key money.

I'm curious enough to wander around and find out. But I think this bad boy is tucked away in upper Gyungnidan or near Hannam-dong. |

What? Nobody heard of MBB before? One of the best places to buy bread until the German baker opened in Highstreet Market.
Usually they're sold out several times a day and I had to race other patrons a couple of times to make sure that I get the last available bread before the next round of baking. It's that popular in the area.
Regular customers have put orders; you can always see several large shopping bags full of bread hidden away under one table. On a typical day, 90% of the good stuff is sold out when I arrive there. If not, I buy for 1 or 2 weeks and freeze what I don't need; the bread tastes as good as fresh even after a week in the freezer.
The older Korean guy who runs the place is really friendly and apologizes profoundly when he's out of goods.
The bread type is French White Style, but far far better than PB, TLJ etc. They have some darker or whole grain variations as well, also cranberry infused bakery items. I think their baguettes have lost some taste recently, but most of the rest is still very good.
The bread made there (you can see and smell the kitchen) retains a lot of moisture, which is essential for a better taste.
Since I'm now using HSM and Spice for my bakery needs, I'm willing to share the location of May Bell.
From the direction of Hamilton Hotel, on the LEFT side,
walk towards the IP Boutique Hotel, walk past,
walk past the Vietnamese restaurant where Frog Bar used to be, just opposite the Adult Store and Jeil Building,
walk past the Caffe Bene,
now continue past a handful of tourist restaurants, it should be only 50m,
there's some sort of old fashioned mailbox outside May Bell's with bread stuck to it, keep your eyes left or you will miss it as the shop is tiny. The Tourist box is not far from it.
If they're sold out, walk on to Spice or walk back to Highstreet Market.
May Bell is cheaper than either.
If you're lazy and rich, buy Romanian Peasant Bread at Tartine and get a rhubarb pie while you're there. If you're just lazy, skip the pie.
The bread sold at Chef Meili's butcher shop is not that great but still better than PB, TLJ etc.

Regarding Itaewon: I blame it on the song "Itaewon Freedom". Now the ghetto is being emptied of its original inhabitants. Try and get your "regular spot" at your "regular bar", you'll find there's a Korean couple already sitting there.
There's no benefit since it's all Korean couples when it should be all Korean girls
I agree with the poster who fears gangnaminization... time to move on. |

I would say 99% of all shops and bars in Itaewon are owned by Korean people. I can agree that socially, foreigners have made a huge impact, but the style (or lack thereof) is all Korean IMO. |
