My wife is thinking of buying a tablet (most likely an iPad), but neither of us know for sure if we're going to use it after the novelty wears off.

Is there something specific that they're good for?
Is it easy to chat online with a tablet?

can one shop online with it?

in other words...realistically speaking...is it worth the money?Smile

they're good for people who like to sit back on the couch and check little bits of information at a time like news, twitter, etc.

also good for people who like to sit and play the odd game or read ebooks.

that said, i'm selling my ipad now because i simply have found no use for it anymore now that i'm not in an airplane 24/7 (it was a saviour then).

of course your miles may vary but with my almost-a-tablet smartphone and its wicked fast "4g" it has all but relegated my ipad to the shelf.

but the galaxy s 2 is smaller than the Ipad.
so really you are giving up size.. and to me thats a deal breaker.

who wants to surf the net, read ebooks, write emails, and play games on a small 4" screen when you can have it all on a 10" screen...

And God forbid having to type out a long document or email on a 4 inch screen. That would be a massive PITA.

Based on size alone, there are many things that a tablet can do better/more comfortably than a phone.

strangely enough, me. well besides the whole read ebooks thing. typing up a quick email using swype on my phone is actually just as fast as doing it on my ipad and i always have my phone in my pocket or near my person which cannot be said for the ipad.

games are also immensely enjoyable on my sII. granted my ipad does have a much better selection. if i want to surf the net i'll just go to my actual computer, neither device does it up to snuff.

this is why i am selling my ipad. Smile

IMO they are a waste.

I agree with wishfullthinking. I already have a smartphone and a laptop, the in-between device is just worthless.

Other than being an E book reader, the Ipad doesnt do anything better than a new smartphone. I suppose if you are a voracious reader, you might get some value of a tablet, but if not, it will just collect dust after a few months.

I'd love to watch you guys type out a 2 or 3 page document on your phone. That would be fun to watch. Talk about being "all thumbs!"

I agree that much of what you can do on a tablet can be done on a phone. But typing is not one of them. Having a larger keyboard and the use of all 10 fingers is a great benefit.

I've had an iPad for over a year now and am an avid user. I use it for...

Document creation (PDF. Presentations)
Scheduling
Book keeping
Emailing

Watching movies and shows
Watching podcasts
Reading comic books
Reading magazines and books
Surfing the web and reading forums like this
reading the news

And my 4 year old daughter uses her's for number of things as well.

I've eliminated paper from my work and have made my down time both more productive and more enjoyable.

For me, it's been great.

i can see theyre not for everyone but i think im gonna get one! but i have to admit the main reason being i suffer from a bad back so being able to browse on a comfy sofa will be great. i'd also say they can be put to great use in the class room too...no more printing flashcards etc. these are my 2 big reasons for purchasing one. finally id say the user experience is just really nice on these devices from ...very slick n intuitive.

still havent decided on what to get tho...galaxy tab 10.1 ipad 2 or wait for windows 8 tabs

but if you don't have a smart phone, but have a pc and normal phone.
then the Ipad is a perfect in-between device.

would I buy an Ipad if I owned a smart phone, notebook and had a PC at my office? NO..

I own a notebook, have a pc at my office and don't own a smart phone, I have a basic phone.. so I am seriously thinking about getting an Ipad.
an Ipad will easily fit into my bag, and these days who doesn't carry around a bag, or can't fit one into your jacket inside pocket..

Sorry, I just dont see the functionality of an ipad or other imitator other than being an expensive Ebook reader.

The only thing that I would consider would be something like:

http://www.malaysianbroadband.info/acer-2011-android-and-windows-7-tablet-unveiled/

Which runs windows 7, comes with a dock and keyboard and would allow me to replace my net-book at a portable device as well as provide some additional entertainment options.

The deal-breaker for me on any tablet is the size.

They are not any more portable than my laptop, so why would I want to take an under powered and limited device with me when I could just take my laptop.

I will concede that for someone who has a desktop as their sole computer, a tablet might be a worthwhile investment so it can replace a portable laptop or netbook.
