On June 19th, girl trot group Iriss Lee Eun Mi (24) was murdered by her ex-boyfriend. The Kyeonggi Shi Heung Police stated that the singer was stabbed several times around her neck by ex-boyfriend Mr. Cho (28) near 2:15AM KST on her way home. Reportedly, Lee Eun Mi recently broke up with Mr. Cho. According to Mr. Cho, the two were in a serious relationship and were even considering marriage. He lost his ability to act rationally and committed murder.

Mr. Cho is currently in police custody. On Sunday, Lees sister wrote, Today (June 19th) my sister went to heaven. I still cant believe it. Please pray for her as she rests in peace on Lee Eun Mis Cyworld mini homepage.

Lee Eun Mi debuted in 2005 with the single Message Of Love and was part of Iris as their main vocalist.

Sounds a lot like the "too drunk to know" defense- a get out of jail free card.

So they're reprinting the suspect's reason. That doesn't make it sound like they're making him the victim.

Just because Hinckley says he's doing it for love and whatever, doesn't mean the press is sympathetic to him or making seem like he's a victim. They're printing it because that's what he said.

Why are they not supposed to print the suspect's reason for killing her?

To say nothing of the fact that things might be lost in translation.

Look the KPress can be bad, but this seems like a bit of a gun jump.

Ohh please! the guy is a psycho plain and simple.
he was probably the kind of Korean guy who wouldn't accept she break up with him, she wanted out because she knew he was crazy, and finally she felt his psychotic wrath!

why oh why she didn't ask her parents for help is beyond me..
very sad indeed when a crazy person will kill you rather than let you be free.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly as I read this. "He lost his ability to act rationally"?? Also, quoting the crazy cold-blooded killer's view of the relationship?

Uh, yeah. Jared Lee Loughner may be a nutcase, but I still want to hear his crazy reason for pulling the trigger.

So you're saying the newspaper should never print the Unabomber's or Osama's or Cho Seung Hui's reasons for their nutball acts?

I for one want to know that Hinckley went nuts because of Jodie Foster. Not that "Hinckley shot the President for reasons our newspaper has chosen not to disclose"

OR do we want a "responsible" media that makes up a killer's reasons for them rather than transmitting them to us?

Yes, we do that...in subsequent follow-up reports.

It seems a bit callous to announce someone's death and give voice to her killer simultaneously. Even if it was a mere two sentence blurb.

I think that's what is throwing me off. If this became a huge scandal of a story that got the whole nation abuzz (which I think it will not), then I'd understand giving the people what they want; the psychological profile of the killer. However, it looks like this is a fairly minor celebrity who has died and I am not sure there will be further articles.

I really don't recall them immediately broadcasting Cho Seung Hui's videos or publishing his writing online.

Here's singapore's yahoo news version. Same story, but despite some minor English mistakes, I feel it sets the tone differently:

http://sg.news.yahoo.com/lee-eun-mi-stabbed-death-195000719.html

"Investigations revealed that the both the singer and 28-year-old Cho had discussed marriage plans before Lee broke off their relationship, causing Cho to feel overrun by anger and committed murder."

Semantics? Maybe so. But the first one rubs me the wrong way.

Thanks Nuke. I was having problems finding other articles, which was why I posted that one. I don't think Iris is well know (I know I wasn't familiar with them), which is probably why there aren't that many articles. Either way, a shame things had to end for her so young.
