1. They are opening the window wide.
2. They are opening the window widely.
Is one of them wrong? If so, why?

I'd say the first is correct and the second is wrong because an adverb would be describing how they were opening the window as in the sentence
They were opening the window slowly. This might work if the action could be descibed as being done widely as in 'He was smiling widely'
The first sentence follows the structure of subject + verb + object + adjective as in
She cut his hair short
They pushed the doors closed

also why would more than one person be opening the window? That sounds suspiciously like a korean-constructed sample sentence for some grammar textbook... |
