I will concede that for someone who has a desktop as their sole computer, a tablet might be a worthwhile investment so it can replace a portable laptop or netbook.

Reading comprehension FTW

Here's your first post on it..

IMO they are a waste.

I agree with wishfullthinking. I already have a smartphone and a laptop, the in-between device is just worthless.

Other than being an E book reader, the Ipad doesnt do anything better than a new smartphone. I suppose if you are a voracious reader, you might get some value of a tablet, but if not, it will just collect dust after a few months.

You've called them a waste and lacking in functionality. And I know that it's not the case.

Can you create and give presentations on your smart phone? How about text documents? I create great looking PDFs on my iPad, but can't imagine doing it on my iPhone.

So...you still calling my experience BS? I'm fine taking it to PMs and meeting up sights to show you how easily I carry out my day with my iPad.

Or... Could it be that you're wrong? That tablets actually have functionality and use for many people?

Wow, I cant believe that I have to slow it down even more.

Did you even read the first post that you quoted?

The second line reads:

You even said it yourself, you do not own a laptop. Fine, if you would rather have a tablet than a laptop then cool, that is your judgement call based on what you would use more. But if the OP, or anyone else for that matter, already has a portable laptop then getting the tablet would be worthless.

Let me ask you... where the frak did the OP mention having a laptop? Mind showing me it in the OP?

Not there? Oh, that was part of YOUR agenda.

Got it.

Your point makes no sense. I post about socks... and you go on a rant about how they are useless, ugly, and you don't need them if you have stockings.

Get it through your head, it's not about stockings... or laptops... this thread is about tablets. And your bashing them is pathetic. I've shown you the functionality and portability of them.

If you want to stand in a subway holding your laptop... all the power to ya. I prefer my iPad.

Here's a thread about a guy asking about laptops. Perhaps you could chime in there about laptops. You know... the thread where the OP asks about laptops. Yeah... laptops. Not tablets.

so you say...

you know some people use their portable notebooks at home as their main pc's , they don't want to carry it around all day, risk getting damaged, exposed, knocked around etc.. so they keep it at home, light and simple and easy to move from desk to bedroom.
having an IPAD means you can carry it around through the city, over to mates houses, , throw it into a bag, carry it under your arm, is 2X lighter than a notebook, smaller, compact and far more stylish! faster to turn on and doesn't over heat. totally portable media player with a larger screen for watching movies, and reading the internet..
I mean come on.. who wants to watch a movie on a 4" screen!!

and if you want a NET BOOK, that's cool too..
but carrying a full blown notebook around all day compared to a IPAD I will take the IPAD anyday of the week. even the small VAIO's are not that cool anymore..

"ill pass on the smart phone and take the TAB.

Where did they say they didn't?

You claim to know that answer, but your answer reeks of speculation.

Simple fact: If you already have a portable laptop and smartphone, getting a tablet is worthless. You can argue it 10 ways to Sunday, and I am sure that you will, but until tablets are more than X-large size smart-phones they are not good enough to replace the functionality of a laptop/net book.

Now that is a different argument all together.

Not sure if I agree with it, but at least it has some merit since both devices are practically the same, one trading size in favor of calling capability.

If you have a truck and a motorcycle, a car is useless.

Hmm... you don't think there's a bit of a flaw in your logic?

Ok, man. Mind telling me how I should read comicbooks on the subway and bus without a tablet?

face it, you're grasping. You've got some weird hate-on for tablets... and have tried to steer this thread away from them. You're now presuming that the OP HAS a laptop... from, what? From PMs with him? Hidden mojo? Where do you get off presuming that everyone interested in a tablet has a laptop?

Let me ask you - do you own a tablet? Have you ever owned one? If not, WTF do you actually know about owning one? I'm telling you that mine has replaced the 'functionality of a netbook' for all of my needs. How many times do I have to list the multiple things I do with it?

Tablets are good to place into that magazine rack next to your toilet. That way when you're having your morning sitdown you can read the news or play some mindless games.

Otherwise I find them 100% useless. For the same money you can get a very nicely powered ultraportable computer (or a netbook for less if you don't mind something not so face) and have something 1000x more ergonomic to use with a thousand more uses. I know they're not one in the same, but really... name one productive thing a tablet can do better than a $250 netbook? Yes you won't use a netbook on the subway, but those people with ipads look so stupid and are so obviously NOT comfortable.

Maybe a 7 incher wouldn't be so bad, but as a toy, still functionally pretty useless IMO.

well the people at Apple in the morning briefing when the Idea was born didn't think so, and either has the world.
if you and nate said that in the board room, you would of heard Steve jobs quote Trump and say " YOU'RE FIRED!"

I have an hour and a half commute each way. I find my iPad very useful in that situation.

If you think it looks dumb someone reading/holing an iPad... I'm guessing Kindles also look equally stupid to you and that laptops on the go are the height of idiocy.

I have a Galaxy Tab. It's 7" and I use it mostly for watching movies, be it at home, school or on the subway. For me it's an ideal PMP. I also have a netbook and a smartphone, but the Iphone is too small for watching movies on, and the netbook, although small, is actually cumbersome for watching movies with on the subway.

So for movies (and comics) the Tab is perfect (for me anyway). Yes, the screen and battery life could be better. I'm not a Mac hater, and iof Captain Korea is happy with his Ipad then so be it.

Anyone else been following the ASUS note EA800?

http://www.asus.com/Eee/Eee_Note/Eee_Note_EA800/

It is a tablet ebook reader, for those who already have a netbook/smartphone but want a large screen ebook reader with tablet capability.

It is still a bit of an in-between device, and still in development (black and white only), but I need an ebook reader, and I love the idea of being able to scribble notes as you read. Apparently the pen sensitivity is very good.

Unfortunately, after releasing it in Taiwan last year, they cancelled the planned english language release after long delays, focusing on the next model instead.

Still, it's worth keeping an eye on if you need a tablet/ebook reader and don't want to pay full tablet pc price.

My ipad's battery life is much longer than a laptop's, it's more portable than a laptop. I can write and sketch with a "pencil" on my ipad (the way I like to plan and think). I can read downloadable comic books anywhere I want. I can play group table top games on it. My son can play with it and use educational activities on it in a natural fashion. He can learn to write and draw on it.

These are things a laptop can't do or not as easily. Sorry, a laptop is heavier and bigger than a tablet. A smartphone is much smaller than most tablets.

The argument here reminds me of my step-mother who didn't want a computer because, "I don't play computer games, why would I want a computer?"

Yeah, I'm constantly amazed at what my daughter can do with the tab. She really shows me how the future of computing will be far more ... hands-on.

And there goes the pot calling the kettle black.

Sure, I assume the OP has a laptop just like you assumed he doesn't

I have now said 6 different times in this thread that if the OP doesnt have a laptop and smartphone, then it may be beneficial for him to get a tablet.

I just dont see how you will not / can not concede the opposite point: If you have a laptop and smartphone, a tablet is worthless.
